Duncan: I meant that the 580 + aftermarket > 600 stock. Of course the 600 + aftermarket > 580 + aftermarket. Am I right about this? This does seem to reflect everything I read.

Maxvla: Sorry man, if you use the 580 on portable equipment or a computer, you're going to want an amp, and soon! It happened to me!

Maxvla...

PM member JMT, and ask about a CHA47 amp, geared for high impedance 'phones... might be a little over budget, but not by much, and will sound a lot better than your average headphone out

ooheadsoo

Sorry, I must've misread you... but yes, you're perfectly correct in what you say (in accordance to my ears at least)

Thanks

I second that. JMT is a pleasure to work with. A cha-47 or cmoy is just about as cheap as you can get for a good amp. It will be a tad over your stated $50 budget though.

Send a private message to JMT, and ask for a quote...

He's a really great guy... so he'll sort out something good for you

whats the diff between a cmoy and a cha47?

i see both of those mentioned in tandem often suggesting they are very similar in cost/performance.

I just checked out this Alizee chick and I think that if you're going to insist on listening to that stuff, you should be listening to something like Bose or Sony V600.

By reading many of the threads here and some else where, in no way can I say I'm a audiophile. I just love my music and movies.

Backround Info
I listen on average to about 6 hours of music a day. Usually I listen for 2 hours max at a time, I take a break, come back and listen some more, and it goes on like that all day. I own sub-$200 Pioneer reciver and it's about 200 watts, maybe more I forget. I have hooked up some decent $80 speakers, a $200+ dvd player that I use more so just as a cd player.

I'm really into alternative, metal and some rap. Bands such as GodSmack, Distrubed, 50 Cent, Benzino, Meallica, and even Prodigy get me going. I also love putting on movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, Snatch, The Matrix, etc. And just blasting it, walls shaking, bed & floor vibrating. It's a small bedroom, so my little system does a good job.

My father owns a pair of expenisve Koss headphones. Really old, heavy, but sound fantastic. It's kinda falling apart. My father is real stingy about letting me listen to his, we often try to beat each other out on the quality of things we get. He has the better home entertainment sytem and I'm known for having a bigger libary, better knives and lighters. I'm hoping a pair of Seenheiser HD 750 or a Sony MDR-V700DJ would entise a little father son envy.

The situation
I been really debating between the Sony MDR-V700DJ at Circuit City for $119 or Etronics for $94 and the Sennheiser HD 570 at Etroincs for about $90 bucks.

On the Circuit City forums and at Epinons.com Sony gets lots of praise for it's bass and it being really great for DJ's. I'm not a DJ's though... (but I still like a little bass)

I hear even more rave reviews about Sennheiser. I've checked out yahoo, mysimon, cnet, Epionons and this forum. Most of the people who seem to own a pair of Sennheisers use them with amps and listen to classical music. The people who seem to love the MDR-V700 are usually DJ's and what not.

I trust buying from Circuit City, they offer an extended warrenty and their very close to my home so if I ever need to return them, it's very convenent. I like Etroincs price, but there so cheap that i don't really trust it. They don't mention anything about warrenty and it just seems "to be to good be true" (like I might get defected or refurbished ones).

My Price Range
I got $120 to spend, possibly $140-$160 if i wait and save up some more. I really don't want to spend $160. That includes 3rd day shipping and also taxes if any.

I don't plan on buying an amp for my headphones, not any time soon anyway. It's not on my priorty list right now.

My Question
I'm wondering if the Sennheiser HD750's are really even worth purchasing if I'm not going to be using them with an amp.

Will the HD 750 headphones still deliver cystal clear and loud booming sound? Or is another mode/brand best suited for my needs. Comfort is a big deal to me as well as clearity.

I wish I could try a pair on and listen to them, but no retailers are near me. So I'm going by the reviews.

My Thanks
Thanks in advance for everyone who opines. If you would like to recomend a differnt brand/model, feel free to do so. Any and all information helps.

Hi ClearYourMind... Welcome to Head-Fi
biggrin.gif

Scrap the HD570s off of your list right NOW!! They're dark, and not what you're looking for AT ALL!!

If you want something in a similar vein to the V700DJs... have a demo of the Sennheiser HD280 primarily... then try the HD25SP, or... if funds allow, the full blown HD25

The HD280 and the and even moreso the HD25 (although this costs a bit more) will sound better for what you want, and so far as I know both can run quite merrily un-amped...

The HD25SP is a bit of a dark horse though... apart from not having the steel cable of the fully fledged HD25 ~ I'm not overly sure what the differences are... still might be worth a listen though?!

Or... the customary recommendation... Sony MDR-V6 (NOT to be confused with the newer V600) might be your meal ticket... at a modest $60 as well... GREAT value and quality for a budget 'phone

CYM,

Welcome to Head-Fi. Sorry about your wallet.

I bought the HD570 at Fry Electroincs for $40 and took them back 3 days later. Believe me when I tell you that even at $25 they are not a bargain. That's when I found Head-Fi...

Don't forget to peruse our For Sale section, where, with a little trolling, you can many times find some really good bargains. (everybody jumps on the really good stuff early, though

a good set of cans is not boomy.

you want the most even sound possible.

apparently the 570's aren't really that great. and definately not for your purposes. i would really look into a pair of grados they appear to suit your musical tastes better.
