Is it possible to do this kind of an upgrade? I did not like Windows Media Center 2005 and I received my new HP Pavillion Media Center TV PC M7664x. I decided to keep the emergency recovery HP partition just in case, but I am now installing Windows XP Pro SP-2. I am entitled to a free upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium for $10 USD shipping and handling fees. Will this work?

Your option is either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate.

MS specifically excludes WinXP Pro to Vista Home upgrade in its upgrade matrix table.

see below, craiglester is right: go for home premium, it will work fine in a clean install.

Umm why not just restore the MCE (it sounds like this came with the PC?), and then with your shiny new Vista Home Premuim disc, do an upgrade from there?

Installing XP Pro is a bit umm redundant in this case.

In any case, you *can* go from XP Pro to Vista Home Premuim, you just can't upgrade it in place, you'd need to do a clean install. I would ALWAYS recommend a clean install over an upgrade install anyway.

Beware moving from a Professional Windows variant to a Home Windows variant. The Home versions do not have dynamic disk support. If you have any hard disks that are initialized as dynamic disks, they will not be readable by your new Vista Home install.
