I was just thinking that maybe the large or medium rat shack pads might be just perfect for these. Quarter-modded, of course.

SR40s did indeed have SR60 drivers, in a cheap plastic housing very much like what you'd get for free with an old Sony CD player.

They sounded horrible though... they were closed. Take any Grado and put your hands over the grille and that's pretty much what the SR40 was. I think I've read about people modding them and getting something better from it, but I decided not to bother and sold my pair pretty quickly. Not worth the $40 at all, when the KSC-35 sounded so much better for less.

I stand corrected!

Dang, those stock pads look really thick! It's hard to tell from the picture, but they look to be about 1/8 inch thick. No wonder they cause veiled treble! I'll bet they are comfy, though.

Yes they are quite confy. They dont lose any of that when quarter moded either. As for the ratshack pads, the medium sized ones barley fit, it took me about 10 minutes to get them both on. They also are pretty veiled alone and i didnt bother to quarter them yet. I would suggest just quartering the stock pads because of the confort and though they lose a TAD bit of the bass slam the overall sounds come right in, especally the mids.

i've also noticed the bass being more wooly with the modded stock pads but with the increase in comfort and without the silly huge looking hd414 pads, the slight loss of bass slam is an acceptable trade off. i've been listening to these cans exclusively for the past three days and i'm still impressed with how good they sound (with modded stock pads) for the price.

I wonder if a "Half-Dollar" hole would sound even better than the quarter-sized hole?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a thin, acoustically transparent material to protect the drivers (post-quarter mod) from hair and such? Could we (and by "we" I guess I mean those of you with iGrados...

) get black pantyhose to work somehow?

That is a very good question. Looking at my modded iGrado pads, its only a matter of time before somthing bad gets in there.

From this picture, it looks like there's some sort of mesh covering the drivers. It's not as prominent as the sort of white-colored mesh Grado glues over the driver holes of its other cans, but it does look like there's some sort of protective mesh there.

Can any current iGrado owner confirm/deny? I'll know in a couple days in any case...

When you quarter mod your igrado pads did you turn the pad inside out to do the cutting or did you go from the side with the open mouth area and place the exacto inside the pad and cut or did you turn the pad over so the area you want to cut is facing you and press down ,flattening the open part of the pad and then cut?
Yes this sounds confusing but i practiced with some old pads and placing the exacto into the open mouth area and cutting caused a ragged hole.Dont want that on 50 dollar phones.

Just got mine today! TTVJ sure ships fast.

Initial observations: The iGrados are much smaller and much slicker looking than anticipated. Pictures don't do them justice.

Also, there definitely IS the same kind of protective mesh glued on the driver cases, under the pads. So you can quarter-mod the pads without worrying about lint and stuff getting into the drivers.

Sound-wise, I think it's too early for me to say anything definitive. But I definitely think I'm going to end up quarter-modding my pads. And I'd like to look into what the deal is with the foam behind the drivers.
