I don't even have a headphone amp at home and I keep all my headphones tucked in drawers in different places so the wife doesn't notice how many there are. I have a few to unload so I can add another nice pair.

Yeah, a rack and maybe you could at least get a smaller or less frequent stink eye

I usually don't buy and release gear much...for the most part I read and get feedback from others that I trust...then purchase.

My wife would love me to get rid of a headphone, once I get the HD800....which I want to release the HD650 , once I get them....that is ....if I end up liking them.

I just hate to let the HD650 go....because I know I will want them back at some time.

Plus, you ever get the stupid thought come in your head....like maybe the next set of HD650 I get, might not be as good as the "magical" ones I already have.

How does that sound........may have to try that line with my wife in the near future!

I too have a special relationship with my 650. It's the only hp that I've never sold. And just don't see myself ever selling.

Everyone see Schiit announced the Valhalla 2 and Lyr 2?!

Valhalla 2 now does 800mw at 300 ohms. That's pretty nuts for OTL. I no power isn't everything; but with Schiit's reputation I'm very interested.

Just buy her something shiny to smooth it all over. Doesn't have to be expensive...just what she would call romantic.    Buy her one of those Willow Tree figures that show the man and wife dancing=female viagra.

Yeah, the new amps look crazy good. If I were in tubes, I'd be throwing my money at them already.

whirlwind take my advice based on personal experience : about 4 years ago I bought the HD800 & sold my HD650 thinking I had upgraded & wouldn't need those anymore. Well that was a mistake on my part.  After a few weeks I really missed my HD650s & eventually bought a pair again.  When they arrived I remember as if it happened yesterday, I couldn't take them out of the box fast enough & plug them in & as soon as the music started I sat down and a smile automatically appeared on my face & my mind went something like "Ah yessssss"… At that moment I solemnly promised myself never to do such a foolish thing as getting rid of them again.  It's been a beautiful musical relationship ever since.  P.S. a few months later the HD800s were gone (but it had to do with the sibilance problem of the earlier models).

I have my HD 650 for a few months now.
Do you guys still get impressed by the HD 650 even after hundreds of hours of use? Because I do.
This headphone is unbelievable.

I have had mine for 4 years, and am rediscovering them. I bought them in a past life to complement my primary system with a Music Fidelity XCan V3. Liked them, but have "rediscovered" my 650's with a Schiit Valhalla Amp, Modi DAC, and my finally getting into computer audio. I enjoy this combination as much as my SounLab, Krell, main rig.

That's interesting to hear. Do you think I would get impressed going from an Essence STX to a Schiit tube amp? Do you feel like the "improvements" in coloring and detail are significant?

You definitely should. How much depends on your sound signature preference

For what it's worth...

I got in a new lcd2.2 with fazor tech today. Just spend the past hour putting the lcd2/lyr (telefunkens) against the hd650/crack (no quickie).

The hd650/crack is the better combo IMO and for many reasons. The newest lcd2 gets too far away from the Audeze house sound. It gives up some sub bass extension and weight for clarity. This is not your older lcd2 with darker treble, luscious natural mids and jaw dropping extended bass. In fact the sub bass is actually better on the crack/650...yep, you heard me. I keep trying to "turn up" the pot on the lyr to get the lcd2 to hit the bass note a little harder. But once it gets to a certain volume, it sounds somewhat out of control and too loud for me honestly.

The mids are more natural and engaging on the 650/crack. The mids on the lcd2 are good for sure and have very litte grain, but they lack the naturalness and realism of the 650. Listening to vocals on the 650 sounds very close to listening live.

The treble is certainly more extended and more of a leading edge than the 650. This is not what I remember about the lcd2 before fazor. I did enjoy the treble on the lcd2 and appreciated the detail and precision. But the 650 offered good treble that was less fatiguing and never gets harsh or strident.

Well, that's only about an hour of comparing the two so nothing too official. Bottom line, the 650/crack stays on the pedestal for me.
