It's just the way the HD650's may sound when you're used to different headphones. If a person has spent ten years of their lives listening to Grados, chances are pretty big they're not going to trust getting used to the HD650's sound if the difference is initially experienced as jarring and when they could get a Grado of the HD650's priceclass instead. I myself was only used to the 598's for a couple of years, and that was pretty much all my experience with high end cans. Admittedly, when I first got the 650's, I too noticed how the 650's seemed to almost be muffled and dark sounding compared to the 598's. But as you get used to the headphones, you start understanding how it presents music (and why). That understanding makes it so that I can now listen to the 598's for hours, but if I switch back to the HD650, there's no impression of a veil or dark sound at all anymore. It just doesn't occur to me and I think it has mainly to do with the unconscious process of understanding the approach of the headphones.

 

I guess much of the complaints about the HD650 being veiled stem from listeners being used to largly or totally polar opposites of the 650's sound signature.

Yeah, I figure now that the whole veil and muffle thing may just be a misconception of perception. I think I will probably have this especially pre burn in because I am coming from an AD700 and an M50 but the prospect of this gorgeous sound that I hear about is enough for me to just push through and make the purchase! This is what I believe I want in a headphone, a beautiful natural interpretation of music, not a neutral flat experience and definitely nothing that "aggressive". Though I'm sure if you throw the right music at them, they'll do fine. I think people sometimes understimate certain headphones. I mean these are pretty high end cans, they won't be perfect with everything, especially if your equipment isn't awesome but they will be at least good with everything. It's just I guess you expect a lot more than good for this price range and that's fine. But once again, no can is perfect for everything *shrug*.

Bottom line, I anticipate being happy and the only thing I worry about is the Maverick tbqh.

I think that too. I like to refer to it as one's "personal neutral". When you don't have much experience or a wide variety of cans, your neutral in your mind is whatever you are used to listening to. Anything different than that will give you a somewhat more extreme view of the can and will make things seem worse than they are or something. I believe in giving a headphone time to sink in to you. At least three weeks to see how you adjust and feel about it with your setup.

The only problem I have with the HD650 is when I put them on knowing I have a limited time to listen and I need to go get other things done, it's very difficult. A song will come on and I'll think "ok, one more..." then the next song comes on and I'm like "oh, man this sounds awesome on these headphones...I'll listen to this last song"

Then the next track comes on....and the next....

As far as I am concerned the HD 650 and Asgard are end game for me. I don't think givin how long it took me to save up to buy these I could get any better sound without spending a hell of alot more money.

Another thing I look forward to is new artists! Every time I've purchased a new headphone, I have come across a phenomena in which certain artists and to a small extent, genres(lookin at you dubstep) became more enjoyable. I wonder if this time around the HD650 will make me appreciate a few artists a lot more than I used to or find some new ones I'll fall in love with just because they'll sound good on them!

What artists or maybe even genres have you grown to love because of the HD650?

Savant is a great artist to check out for dubstep, particularly the album "ISM". Really into him right now...makes Skrillex look like an amateur with a casio keyboard (I've always thought Skrillex was WAAAYYY overrated, anyway...he's just marketable because he looks emo)

I've been listening to a lot more female vocalists lately too...Lana Del Rey sounds particularly amazing/smoky/sexy with the HD650.

just ordered HD650's from Amazon.

Now to off load my HD595's :D

Should I get an amp first and use it through uDAC2-HP (headphone out only), or toss the uDAC2-HP, get a new DAC (like the hifidiyme sabre) and then take my time with finding an amp?

Savant? Cool I'll check him out. I don't listen to much Skrill anymore after his last ep dropped or whatever. The production on it was kinda wack, especially the bass. I like the...well, how do I say, textures of his drops? They sound really cool to me but most of his songs just lack bass and impact. Like I used to love Kill Everybody but nowadays I just can't take the lack of bass. Scary Monsters still has some cool bass to it imo but that's mostly where it stops for bassy skrill songs. I like listening to Foreign Beggars and Camo & Krooked(although i guess they are technically drumstep/dnb) a lot as well as Flux Pavillion but after that, I just stick to cool remixes I find on UKF and such. Like it seems people always do awesome remixes of DJ Fresh songs imo.

Well, it's usually a love it or leave it experience with the o2. It just wasn't for me. It just didn't sound musical to my ears. I suppose I like a little warmer signature. The lyr with good tubes just rocks my world. 

Ok, more of a preference thing.  Not to say they don't sound bad in general.

I saw your topic where you said you had a chance on a good deal on the hd600's. Just wondering what made you change your mind?

I guess the question would be if you'd be satisfied with the Udac. If not, buying a new amp gets you in the situation of double amping, which may not be advisable due to possible safety issues and double amping adding distortion. You'd have to find out how much of a problem that might be.

I know this is a long shot, but has anyone compared the O2 vs the Headroom Micro Amp (latest version only) with the HD-650?

I know Tyll has but I don't want to bother him.

I can't imagine the HD-650 getting better than it already is with the Micro Amp for under $400.

I actually prefer it to the E9 and Asgard by far.

I'm using it with the ODAC and was thinking the O2 would mostly be a side-grade or sound too similar or even thinner (like the E9).

I don't find the Micro Amp to add any warmth to my headphones. If so it's so small that it's barely detectable. It seems VERY revealing of what's connected to it.

I think the O2 might just be a side-step (or downgrade..shh don't tell NWa_vguy) and if I want to improve the 650 any further I should just get a hybrid tube amp like the Lyr.

I don't really listen to enough music to justify $500+ on an amp

Honestly, for $350 I grab up a used lyr and be done if it would work with your other hp's. There might be a better pairing as well as better amp, but I haven't heard it.
