What would be a better pair, staying around the $500 range?

Used T90 perhaps?  Or used HD700 if you're lucky, and whether they are upgrades or not will probably depend on your tastes.
Or rather, he's just echoing that mindlessly.  HD650 frickin' rules, upgrade your cable if you want.

I would go with either Black or Silver Dragon for HD650.  I've tried both Black and Blue as interconnects, and I think Black would be a better complement to HD650.  But over Moon Audio cables, I would take a DHC Molecule cable instead.  Well, actually, I'd rather build it myself, both for the fun of DIY, not to mention skipping out on the two month wait time for a completed cable.  =X

Of course, the HD650 is a great headphone, upgrade the cable if you want!  I guess I should ask what you are after by upgrading the cable?  Do you want a different sound?  Or do you want the existing sound to be better?  If so, in what way?

I just think it's ridiculous to spend more than 1/2 of what the headphone costs on a friggin' cable.  IMO your money would be much better spent exploring different headphones, which will offer much more difference than any cable will ever make.  Who knows, you may find a set of 'phones that suit your taste much better than the 650.

The money should be spent on better amps or dacs instead of cables.

If you need something local, just get some 60/40 rosin core solder from Radio Shack.  If you want to buy Cardas solder, you should buy from an authorized Cardas dealer to be sure you are actually getting Cardas solder and not some crap solder that someone repackaged and sold on eBay as Cardas solder.

There are plenty of genuine ebay sellers who stock a whole range of Cardas products and there is no reason why a ebay seller can not also be a authorised dealer. It doesn't take long to check their product and feed back history. As with everything don't buy blindly it pays to do a little homework first. Personally I doubt any ebayer with 100% positive feed back would risk negative feed back on a item which after costs they might make only a dollar on. Happy and satisfied customers are repeat customers.

Did someone make a post here mentioning EQ profiles (other than me)? I can't find it anywhere yet I'm sure it was this thread.

Anyone compared the BH Crack + Speedball with Woo WA3?

Price for BH Crack with Speedball package = $279 + $115 + $79 + $6 = $479 (not including the labour to build it up)
Price for Woo WA3 = $520

The prices are similar, but the WA3 definitely has a way better metal finishing and appearance. Now, how about the sound and synergy?
