I have a barely-used ZDT with the silver transformer option that I rarely use. I got it from Craig Uthus in September, 2011 and have hardly touched it since. There are no dings, scratches, smudges, smears, stains, cornewr dents or ripples on it, and it sounds glorious. I had a bad experience with an order I made when buying my LCD-2 phones and I haven't been able to enjoy head-fi since. I thought that buying this amp would lift me out of it but it hasn't happened yet. Whenever I put the phones on I get angry. I've just been hanging on to it until I need money for a new cartridge.

That's ironic, I had a pretty horrid buying experience with the ZD itself.

However I still love the amp and what it can do, if not the associations of its acquisition. My advice is sell the LCDs, get a different pair of cans, and enjoy the the tunes. Remember it's about the music, not the gear.

The ZDT is one of the EC headphone/speaker combos like the new 2A3 and 45 offerings, and as a versatile amp is not equaled until spending considerably more. Your PSS option really elevated the amp and it is very capable on speakers at 6 watts per channel. You're right about the glorious sound, as the predecessor to the 2A3 and 45 amps in theory if not exact topology it's both underrated and overlooked.

Replace the LCD-2 with one of the T50RP variants, pair with speakers and turn that bad experience around. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water - you made a good choice in 2011 that is still valid today.

Oh man, my Zana is not happy right now. One of the front two tubes got knocked out by the housekeeper or wife, who aren't even allowed near my listening area…

.  I turned it off after one channel was out, saw the tube was ajar, put it back in, re turned on and now volume is super low, like it went into protection mode. I replaced all the tubes again and let it cool and still problem.  I now replaced the driver, just in case to see if something effected that and am letting it cool all the way down now, crossing my fingers…..Hopefully i won't have to drive it up to Craig and lose it for a time.

Looks like quite a few components have changed between the ZD & ZDSE (a little more than just a switch for the negative feedback for the 3/12 ohm path). Did you do the changes yourself?

Tayf audio in Turkey carried out  the changes.

So here I am with a few precious hours of down time, listening to favorites while also going through the library of albums, all through a ZDSE + HD800 combination. Alternating between DP1 and V800 DACs both fed from a Synchro-Mesh. What a treat for the ears. The ZDSE never ceases to amaze me with its presentation of the music as I rediscover albums that I have not heard in a long time.

Waiting for replacement tubes, boy do I miss mine. Both big tubes went out at once. Craig said it looked like just failure after almost five years, I call it tube warrantee running out means failure.
