Yea, I kind of understand what you mean. I'm taking 8 classes/21 units this quarter (12 is considered full-time)... I have much less free time than I used to have... Most of the time, I have to choose between either going on the computer or listening to music, and I usually choose to go on the computer... for communication reasons lol. Yea, I don't spend as much time actually listening to music now.

Not exactly a sighting, but a funny story.

So I took my ms-1's (wood cups, jmoney headband, copper wire) to school. They were in my backpack and I was bored because the whole class was waiting for the prof that always shows up 40mins late.(a lot of people at this school are looooosers... it's community college =p so not a lot of interesting conversation happening) so I started to pull them out, and before I barely even have them out of my backpack some guy says "hey! are those them sen.. senshizers things?" I started to crack up alittle inside because of how he said sennheiser. I replied "no they arn't. You mean sennheiser?"

So class finally ends and I figured, I got my ms-1's with me, I might as well use em. So I pulled them out to listen to while I walk home. I put them around my neck and this girl gave me a look like I was some sort of alien and said "what the hell are those things?" I explained how "these things" make music actually sound like music, rather than the noise.(that white earbuds make =p) She still gave me a look like I was some sort of insane person...

Just found it interesting the kinds of looks I got from people. All I see around campus are stupid white earpuds.

Burned. So harsh, but chud's right.

This thread has been VERY revealing about many of Head-fi's less experienced members, and uncovered the darker side of the satisfaction that they experience from this hobby. Perhaps they're in it for the wrong reasons?

I think your reading to much into it. It's not that at all.

Did anyone see that commercial for "Numb3rs"?

The guy had a set of headphones in like 3 seconds of it, but I didn't get a good look at them.

Although I'd like to think that we're all elitists to some extent on a spectrum (except if your life totally sucks and you have absolutely nothing to be happy and/or proud about... but if you're that person, you wouldn't be reading this) being an audiophile doesn't mean you can throw social rules straight out of the window. You're still behooved to be civil and respect others' feelings and properly carry out your actions in social situations. This goes for other activities in life as well. For example, artists shouldn't openly chastise people who are not artistically inclined. That just socially doesn't work.

Also, not everyone at community colleges are losers! It's best to avoid the tendency to judge a large amount of people at once, without even having talked to them. Just start conversation with some of them, and they'll open up and talk about some very interesting things! You may just make some [additional] pretty nice friends! I was shy for my first two quarters at De Anza, and then I started to try to network. I'm branching out and getting to know more people on campus now. It's pretty cool.

I'll agree with Vyu223, i'm going to say a majority of us especially us younger ones are a bit like that in any sense. If you feel you belong to a clique or something i suppose you instantly begin to think your clique or way is ultimately dominant and better. I mean... How many people here would love to have the money they spent on audio and still think their iBuds are great

.

But anyways.. I've spotted some AKG271's in my finance class across the lecture theatre. I've spoken to him a few times as he's been in a few classes but i hadn't the nerve to ask him to audition them

. I've been approached by someone regarding my cans once and he seemed nice lol, haven't seen him around the study areas since but eh
tongue.gif
. Makes me feel special when someone thinks i'm cool
biggrin.gif
lol, everyone else just thinks i'm nuts when i've got my massive cans with my ipod+amp

.

Edit:
I will say, i do blam my best friend a bit for not having an optical cable going to her rather nice speaker setup. Onboard soundcard ftl

I saw someone walking down the road with some Sennheiser DJ phones... They looked like HD205s to me.

I was trying to shorten the story. So don't twist my words and make assumptions on how the conversation went. You're also making assumptions about how i've never talked to this person.

vYu, It also depends on the area and the community college. Some community colleges are much better than others.

Twisting your words? Pay attention now, because you're missing the point.

[Some guy says "hey! are those them sen.. senshizers things?" I started to crack up alittle inside because of how he said sennheiser. I replied "no they arn't. You mean sennheiser?"]

Laughing at someone else, merely because they're misinformed? He's being nice to you and trying to start a conversation because he's interested, way to go Frozengecko. I always feel lucky when a stranger points out my headphones and would like to learn more, even if they haven't had the chance to do the research before our chat.

[I explained how "these things" make music actually sound like music, rather than the noise.(that white earbuds make =p) She still gave me a look like I was some sort of insane person...]

Need I really say anything here? You made me cringe with that line.

Your personal enjoyment of music and knowledge in higher fidelity sound reproduction doesn't categorically devalue the music enjoyment of others. If this isn't elitism, I don't know what is.

Ok guys, this isn't adding any value to the thread, but I will throw in my worthless $.02: Yes, I think it's normal for anyone passionate about a hobby to approach it with some amount of pride. However, most of us at head-fi (and, no doubt, people 'into' other stuff) make at least a semi-conscious effort not to develop a superiority complex on the grounds of our hobby-related knowledge. People who are prideful about their Bose/Skullcandy/Dr. Dre equipment do bother me, especially when they try to give others advice on audio. But I try not to be a jerk about it even then.

Yes, FrozenGecko was a little over-the-top with his story, but, even being a former CC student, I did not find it offensive, just immature. It was all in good humor as far as I'm concerned, so lets just skip it an move on with the thread.

On the subject of headphone sightings: I was doing some hardware installation in a University research office. Everyone there uses a Mac, so I had several QC2/QC3 sightings (as well as a few of those 30" monitors - DROOL). Bose and Apple go hand in hand, in more ways than one. Also, I was surprised at how little passive isolation those QCs provide - in a quiet environment I could hear every note of their tunes from 3-4 feet.
