My Senn HD580s are on the way. What should I expect?

I'm a fairly new member of Team "Sorry About Your Wallet", but in that time my collection of headphones has grown from the crap that came with the player to the AKG K81DJs, Sennheiser PX-100s (older model), Koss KSC75s, and Audio Technica A700s. I love something different about all of the signatures of those headphones, but have yet to own a real entry-level "high fi" set. Now, I have the HD580s on my way, which are purportedly a good set of entry-level high-end cans. The cans are used and have already been burned in. While I'll be using the same sources and will only be looking at amps down the road, what can I expect from these cans considering my background thus far? Yet again I find myself excited at the prospect of new headphones arriving, but hey, at least these were a trade and not a jab to my wallet. Thanks.

Hello,

All the cans you own right now have a more forward presentation than the 580. I think you will feel suddenly there's a lot of "space" in the music you listen to, depending on what you listen to; jazz, classical. For me, they are a little lifeless for rock. The 580 will harder to drive. It would be good if you could invest in an amp.

The 580/600/650 line has a sort of similar sound signature to the px-100, IMHO. The sound is relaxed, polite, and a little dark. I like Senn.'s because they're so approachable: they play well with all sorts of music, are really quite forgiving of certain recording characteristics, and are pretty darn comfortable once you break the pads in. I think you'll like 'em. I also think you'll be ordering 600 grills in a week or two, but we'll see.

Don't expect good sound from the 580s without an amp. If your budget is tight I suggest a HeadFive, but if you can push it a little, I suggest a WooAudio 3. Mine just came today, it is amazing. Check my impressions in the amplification section. And this is before I have the Cetron 7236 and it's not even burned in yet.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised how unique HD580 sounds compare your current phones. It has much warmer and more bassy presentation than your currently phones. I'm not sure what you will be powering HD580 with, but it will sound incredible when you pair HD580 with a tube amp. When you listen to electric guitar solo, you will be amazed how liquid it sounds compare to other phones out there. Welcome to the TEAM Sennheiser!

Mine were very dark and receeded and imparted a very distant sound on the music. While they were great for classical and jazz, I found them to be very disappointing with everything else, even with an amp.

Once broken in and stretched over a stack of books for a couple of days they were very comfortable however.

That's good to hear. While others have said an amp is required to get the best sound out of them, and I expected this, I wonder how well they'll mate with my Onkyo HT receiver. I've been pretty surprised so far at how well it drives my other 'phones, including my infamously difficult to amp K81DJ.

angler31337,

When you say you think I'll be ordering the 600 grills soon, are you referring to the actual cover on the outside of the drivers? Thanks.

When I first tried mine out I didn't think they was much of a difference between them and the HD-497's I was using previously, but the more I listened to them the more I heard little bits and pieces of the music I was missing before. I've used them extensively in the last couple of months and now that I am used to their sound, I now notice a dramatic difference when I put the 497s back on. The 580s are super comfortable and sound amazing. It took me some time to really appreciate them, but now I get that "little taste of heaven" every time I adorn them.

Yes, the grills over the earpieces. The 580's are a rather nice looking pair of headphones with them, not so nice in their standard grills. Best sound for the money!

Hmm, where might I be able to buy such grills and how much do they typically run? Thanks.
