My system is:

Sennheiser HD600
Creek OBH11SE
Sonic Link Whisper inteconnects
Kenwood DP-900 CD player (1985)

As you can see, my CD player isn't the best in the world so yesterday I went to a HIFI store and listened to some newer models (Marantz CD6000OSE, Cambridge D500SE, Thule CD 100 II). The guy in the store hooked them up together with the same system that I have at home, so I could switch players and find the one that I was looking for.

I was pretty amazed when I first listened to the Marantz; the bass was a lot better then at home, more punchy and more detailed. The same goes for the Thule (which I find to be the best player). When listening to the Cambridge I did almost feel like listening to my player at home (no bass, tame mids, spooky soundstage).

Now I'm wondering: is it common that different player can differ that much in frequency response? Maybe theres something wrong with my amp or headphones at home? But then again, the cambridge did also sound bass shy at the shop. I just hope that when I buy the Thule I get the same lovely sound at home.

Why don't you just lug your CDP along too?
You're already taking everything else along...

How long was the equipment in the shop on before going in? Chances are that it wouldnt have been on for an hour or so.

Also its much better to get a home demo if possible just to be on the safe side. You don't mention how much the Thule is but I'd be willing to bet that the shop would let you home demo for a weekend if you leave a deposit (say a credit card swipe or something)

Anyway enjoy your new cdp when you get it!

Cheers...
