DT990 Pro Impressions Thread

Thanks for the replies. I'm willing (and actually interested in) going to tubes. It doesn't need to be in the price range as the fiio. Say under $500. I am interested in the Lyr 2. I played around with EQ in iTunes and it did help a bit. I actually took away some DBs of the highs and it did help. I don't really have an independant DAC. For music I use on board motherboard sound from my PC, for gaming on the PS4 I use a Sound Bladter Recon3D USB sound card.

I was massively impressed with the Little Dot amps. Even just the MK2 is plenty.

I really love my Garage 1217 project sunrise 2. I have had it for almost 3 years and still use it daily- even more than more expensive amps I own. The latest version #3 is even more versatile as it has 3 impedance settings vs the 2 on my version. Customer service is also excellent. If your budget is $500 that leaves enough left over to get a decent DAC such as Modi2 uber or ODAC.
That amp and the 250 oh 990 pro is my favorite combo. If after that you're not happy, I would say these aren't the cans for you.

Today I received my new pair of DT990 Pro Black Limited Edition for use at work. Very impressed so far! Nice comfy and spacious ear pads and the clamping force isn't too tight on my big head. I ran a few rudimentary tests with Audiocheck's Headphones and Earphones Benchmarking Test Files and came up with the following results:

  1. Frequency response (that I can hear, based on the limits of my hearing) = 20hz-17kHz
  2. Spectral flatness = 9.5kHz peak
  3. Dynamic range (dBFS) = -42
  4. Bass quality = Passed
  5. Driver matching = Passed
  6. L/R wiring = Passed
  7. Binaural test = Subjectively sounds like soft knocking

It's interesting that the ~9kHz peak has been picked up by other people measuring this headphone. I could hear it clearly when running a frequency sweep but, listening to music, it hasn't bothered me one bit. I've listened to a few favourites and I would describe the sound as quite soft and relaxed, bass has a thump to it but isn't overblown at all. I'm using an Asus Xonar U7 DAC/Amp to power the headphones with the volume at 20%. Very pleased so far!

So I don't like the 990 Pro plastic material

I was looking at the DT 990 Premium Edition with regular long cables and Aluminum cups. But I don't know if those ever go on sale

Is there anything different about Premium and Pro sound wise?

What is the bass like in the 990 vs 770? Does the 990 have the same sub woofer bass as the 770?

The Pro felt more durable to me.

The difference between the Pro and Premium is the clamping force, with the Pro having a tighter clamp. This in turn results to more bass, not a very high amount of difference, but noticeable (I got to compare the Pro 250 Ω and Premium 250 Ω once). I think the Premium 32 Ω was only sale for $130 a few weeks ago.

The 990 doesn't quite dig as low and isn't as thumpy as the 770 (comparing the Pro 250 Ωs) but is relatively linear. Its bass is like a more mid bassy 880. The 990 has better genre bandwidth as it isn't as V-shaped as the 770. I remember the old 80 Ω to be very unnaturally/oppressively bassy to my ears.

I think DT990 Premium cups are all plastic, just look metal.

Speaking of that, does anyone know how to get the outer grill part of the cup off of the DT990 Premium?  The "tabs" inside the cup make it look like you just turn the grill area to line the tabs up with the open area for them and then remove the grill, but there are two knobs/poles sticking up in two of the tab areas that block it from turning.  I don't see how you can turn the grill to line up those tabs and tab areas without breaking those two plastic pieces sticking up.

I recently purchased the DT990 Pro 250 to try something other than my HD598's.  After I adjusted to the sound, it was exactly what I was looking for.

My current setup is PC via HDMI to Denon AVR-X2000 receiver, DT990 plugged into receiver.  I definitely prefer the sound from the receiver vs. the Schiit Fulla 2, there was much better bass impact through the receiver.  My usage is for movies and single player gaming.

My issue is that I'm going to be relocating and will be leaving my HT equipment at my current home.  So I'm now searching for something that will give me similar sound to my AV receiver.  I've been looking at the Asus STX II with the option to swap Opamps, Fiio K5/E17k combo, Supreme Sound Lycan (plus some sort of DAC), Audio-GD NFB-11.  Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions based on those options?  When not gaming, I've used the 990's with an Astro Mixamp 5.8 and like the sound for Plex usage, with and without the bass boost (prefer bass boost on).  I tried a set of Fidelio X2 recently also for a couple weeks, and much preferred the DT990 after many hours of comparisons.  To me, the X2 had a wider bass presence but lacked the impact of the 990.

The 990.250 's wooly-ish bass is loved by many and hated by many. Very strange and fun bass. But a dragonfly+small tube amp like a little dot or bravo (ocean in my case) is a compact and easily moveable setup. Or you can always pick up a better amp/dac combo ofc :p or used receiver that you can dump at a pawn shop if you move again. I enjoy albums like this on them with a bit of that cleaned up, then dirtied with tube distortion. These have gone into the shadows with all the fancy stuff coming out, but i could live with this one can on an island.

Hey guys.

I have the dt 990 pro and the  fiio e10k

This setup is pretty decent but I still feel I need further amplification since the bass is not good enough without the bass boost and with the bass boost everything becomes distorted and terrible.

Gonna spring for a Magni 2 And use the fiio as a DAC at home, and as a DAC/AMP in the office since its more portable.

Other neutral ss amp won't change the bass significantly (or at all).
I haven't compared E10K with Magni 2 side by side with DT990 but I've compared E10 with Magni using DT990, E10 had tiny bit more bass/warmth than Magni.

If you want a warmer signature than the E10K go for the Vali 2 instead.
