I'm about to buy this player for SACD and DVD-A at a very low price.

However, I'll mostly be using it for two-channel speaker and headphone playback. I've heard a rumor that this system has a problem playing back discs that have 5.1 capability (or any DVD-A) into two channels, in that it only sends the bass frequencies to the sub (.1) output, even if you adjust the speaker settings on the player.

Does anyone have any experience with this machine in a two-channel system? Thank you.

Really? It sounds like DVD-A is unsuitable for headphone use by the nature of the playback device limitations then...

There are folks that make bass management processors that can correct this deficiency. Outlaw Audio folks make a good one, for example. But for the most part, dvd-a seems to be more gimick, SACD seems to be where the love is

I think that I will hold off on my purchase until further research then. Thanks.

I use a Red Wine Audio modified version of the 578a for headphone playback of sacd. It's a pretty good system. It's appparently also possible to modify it to output sacd and dvd-a via spdif...

Really?! DVD-A perhaps, but SACD? I'd be (as I'm sure many would be) curious to see that link please.

I don't have a link handy, but apparently the DV578A is the only sacd player that resamples all DSD to 88.1khz to be processed by the on board dac. Not ideal, but makes it then possible to take the digital out, if you grab the signal from the right place.
