Just Got My G5 Ipod!

There are roughly three people on various forums who've reported skipping with VBR MP3s. I tend to think those posters are just trolls, because the problem has never been reproduced in a public demonstration. No one on Head-Fi has ever claimed to have this problem. (Except one guy, who it turned out was not getting skipping; he was getting clipping by trying to drive unpowered speakers with the headphone jack of his iPod.)

A separate issue is whether VBR AACs created with Nero ever have skipping. I haven't followed things closely enough to tell what the situation is there (beyond what's known about the Shuffle, specifically). In any case, if you're not going to be using Nero to rip your files, it's a non-issue.

My nano skips. Quite often. Annoying to say the least.. it's more like a glitchy kind of noise.. stuttering..

It's not like the Nano is any more easily scratched than previously iPods. iPods have always been easily scratched and I am sure this 5G is no exception.

Can you find a copyright-free music file that skips and post it, so that other people can check whether theirs skips as well, to determine whether this is a widespread problem or it's just your Nano that's defective?

Well it happens quite randomly, but I can to find a copyright-free track that's VBR to test out.. dunno where I'd find something like that though.

To bad they don't make a hybrid Ipod with a hard drive and a gig or two of flash memory. Then you could load you movie into the flash and not run down the battery so quickly by running the hard drive.

That's EASY: http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.php

LOTS of copyright-free, awesome music, in lossless, Ogg, and VBR MP3.

I have a Nano, have used it less than 10 hours, but no skipping so far.

Actually, I could find at least two threads running on HydrogenAudio.org about this issue.

cool, well people can go there and test theirs out and come to their own conclusions then.. mine skips, but i thought it was for all of them. if it turns out its a defect, im taking it in. it'd be nice if i could just exchange it for the 60gb video and pay the difference..

It seems like this skipping issue is largely confined to the Nano and the smallest capacity Mini, and AAC tracks encoded with iTunes seem to be fine, but the problem is still disappointing to see.
