This has been mentioned already but X-Fi seems to be what you are looking for. My budget does not allow it yet but after I have read the review on tomshardware.com and couple of threads on hardforum, dslreports and audioholics I defenitely want to buy X-Fi. I have just checked Otego.de and they have it in stock. So it is available in Europe already!

ok, I don't understand why you would buy a cheap card to drive an expensive DAC, why wouldn't you just buy a good card instead? O am not talking about a creative or AV710, grab a Nice M-audio, St-audio or hootech..maybe a hootech MKII...Thats just my opinion, but I didn't understand buying a sub $100 sound card, to drive a DAC worth $100's? seem like a big waste of money. Just grab A real nice sound card...and be done with it..

I'm a little suprised no one has mentioned emu. I suggest the 1212m, well worth the money, it does everything you want. It's should sound at least as good as the top x-fi card (assuming they didn't mess up the signal path of the x-fi at all) as it uses the same converters, but costs less. Also the lower x-fi's don't have as good of converters.

The emu 0404 is also quite popular around here. Very nice for the money.

i think they're fine for stereo, they just can't do surround sound or eax (and not that many games use eax anyway)

Most of my games support EAX

I thought they all did

(And those that does do sound better with it)

To be honest, I am looking for an all round card as well, and I think I will have to go with an X-Fi simply for the gaming aspect.

He needs something versatile enough to do everything. One of the main reasons I opt for X-Fi is the surround sound over regular headphones. I have not came across a single negative comment on that in any review I have read so far and I am really interested. Instead of paying for the card and receiver and 5.1. headphones it is better -at least, for me - to buy all-in-one good soundcard.

Exactly, allthough keep in mind pro cards from EMU or M-Audio do not work with games above stereo and do not decode dolby in movies. They are great for music production but if you are looking for versatile card and decent sound quality I cannot see anything that compares with X-Fi
