Best Stoner Rock Album
May 10, 2005 at 4:54 PM Post #16 of 69
My first post on this thread was about Stoner Rock. Now, here are some stoner rock albums that we used to bust out when things got really green.

Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor - NO PROTECTION (Prepare to have your mind warped)

Painkiller - EXECUTION GROUND (One of the scariest damn albums ever created, if you have the patience for Bill Laswell's epic compositions and subterrenean dub bass, Mick Harris' cavernous drumming and John Zorn's banshee wail sax. This one is from the depths of hell my friends).

Public Image Ltd. - METAL BOX (2ND EDITION) (One word.. Albatross)

Meat Puppets - MEAT PUPPETS (There's only one way to experience this album.. experienced.. then it all makes sense)

Can - EGE BAMYASI (this one was so ahead of its time it's scary)

A.R. Kane - 69 (dubgazer just never caught on, but this was one amazing album)

Mercury Rev - YERSELF IS STEAM (In my book, they've never topped "Frittering")

Scorn - EVANESCENCE (probably the finest ambient dub album ever)

Automaton - DUB TERROR EXHAUST (probably the 2nd finest ambient dub album ever)

Blind Idiot God - CYCLOTRON (these guys did 3 albums back in the late 80's/early 90's, combining a weird love of thrash, 70's funk and cavernous dub.. this, their 3rd album, produced by Bill Laswell, is their crowning achievement.. you headphone guys should eat this up)

Halou - WISER (a great ambient/electronica album with sexy female vocals to get completely lost in)

K.. think all the bases are covered.

I like "Feathers" a lot better. "Shivering King" is great, but a bit one-dimensional in comparison.

just my opinion..

Hey braker! Nice to see you back for more

I already mentioned a few of my favorites in the Black Mountain thread so won't go over them again, and besides most of them have already been covered. Kinda depends whether you lean more towards the Sabbath sound or prefer the cleaner and more bluesy sound of classic bands like Cream or Zeppelin. Masters of Reality is more like Cream than Sabbath and even has Ginger Baker on the kit for the Sunrise on the Sufferbus album. Very cool one. Maybe borderline stoner rock, but still a great album. And, of course, Ween is rock by a couple crazy stoners, but not really "stoner rock", at least as most people use the term

The stoner rock category has kind of a desert rock pathway that some of my favorites are on. Bands like Giant Sand and Eleventh Dream Day. Lots of Neil Young and Lou Reed in the mix and vocals. The Stalled Parade album from EDD was a favorite iof mine from a few years ago as is just about anything in the last few years from Howe Gelb and the Calexico guys, aka Giant Sand. Check out Chore of Enchantment, maybe their best, or at least most consistent. And the last double album from Steve Wynn called Here Come the Miracles is all aces. Goat tacos and lots of beer and desert sand.

To me, 70s prog is the ultimate stoner music (if it still means the same thing it did back then!). How about

Wigwam - Being
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Zappa/Beefheart - Bongo Fury

Others:

Stones - Love You Live
Black Sabbath - Anything from the first four albums
Led Zep - Physical Graffiti

What the 70's didnt' have was "the drone"...and the drone is a great advancement in stoner technology

I'm going to be honest and ask this question, being that I'm a little under the influence right now...and feeling a little ambitious:

Kevin, I know you're of a different generation, but have you tried any of this newer stuff mentioned? If not, I think you're greatly missing out.

I'm listening to Low's "The Great Destroyer" right now.

I'm going to ask an even bolder question that prog did--what business does Kevin Gilmore have posting in a thread about STONER rock?

Phish is definitely not touring.

The Biscuits suck right now. I've been seeing them since '98 and their show right now is sad
