Making my step up from HF-2 (when it arrives to the RS1) very good. I was thinking about Gs-1000i and skip RS-1 but unless the HF-2 is like the RS-1 than Ill get RS1i and maybe GS later on when nothing else strikes me. ex being after I find a pair of L3000

I gotta say the comfy pads are seriously underrated around here. After having used the flats for about 6 months on my RS1, I decided to put a pair of comfies on the RS1 and difference is substantial. Bass sounds just right - not as bloated as the flats but much deeper than the bowls and the highs - not as muddied as the flats and not as piercing as the bowls. They're also the cheapest to replace and, of course, the comfiest.

I also want to replace my bowls in my RS-1 and i have a few questions:

1.what is the difference between the "comfy" pads and the "flats"? i mean...physically , and where can i get them...? (are the "comfy" ones with or without the whole in the middle)

2.are those pads adding some more bass to the sound?

thx!

I also have another issue with the RS-1. i have a relatively small head and i use the headband in it's tightest(smallest) position. but after a while it gets loose and i always have to shorten it again. any of you got a solution for this? any kind of mod or something to hold it together permenantly?

The comfies are the ones without a hole in the middle (although, if you're on a tight budget, you can buy the comfies and cut a hole in them). You can get the pads from Todd the Vinyl Junkie:

Flats

Comfy pads

The comfies are $10/pair and the flats, $35/pair.

They both add more bass to the sound over the bowls at the loss of some soundstage. The problem with the flats is that they tend to muddy up the highs and mids of the sound. To my ears, at this point, the comfies seem to provide a very nice middle ground with highs that are clearer than from the flats while still providing a deep level of bass and decent soundstage. But thoughts on which is the better "flat" pad is very diverse here.

the pads just come off...they're not glued or anything. just remove them as you would remove a sock

i'm one of those in the minority that thinks the rs1 sounds best with the bowls. the rs1 and the hf1 are the two grados that i like with bowls over the flats. if the hf2 are as bassy as first reports say, i think the bowls will be fine on those as well.

another pad that many around here like (myself included) are the sennheiser hd414 pads. they're yellow, but they can be dyed black (i wouldn't bother)...you can cut a hole in them to give a little bowl-like character to them...they're somewhat in between the bowls and the flats and may be a good middle ground for you.

thanks for the advise. I saw those pads on grado and they look pretty nice imo. sound wise, the hd414 pads also add some bass to the sound? and i assume they are more comfortable than the bowls.
don't get me wrong...the sound with the bowls is awsome, but i wouldnt mind just a tiny tiny bit more bass. ( i don't have a problem with the highs )

also,i wouldn't mind a more comfy pads. should i go for the hd414 instead?

by the way,is there a way that i can make the headband to stay in place and not get loose all the time? hold it together somehow? am i the only one that have this problem?

put a wanted post in the for sale forum...if you don't get any leads, i think you can get them directly from sennheiser. i don't know where you would get them in israel, though...

)

thanks again, i will look for them!
and another question if i may...am i supposed to mod the pads (make a hole in the middle or something..) or just use them sealed as they are? and what is exactly the sound diferences from the grado flat pads?

With the headband, you might want try a search of the forum. I've seen some posts in the past that addressed that issue and might provide an answer.

Good luck on getting the pads you want and let us know how they sound to you when you get them
