Got my Etys over a week ago and overall I'd say I'm very dissapointed. I've been listening to them for hours each day and leaving them on while I'm not listening to them to break them in. I know I'm getting a good seal, I've been wearing ear plugs for years so I don't have a problem putting them in properly. They honestly don't sound any better then the Sony headphones that came with my discman.
Any suggestions before I send them back?

Wow, that's surprising that they don't sound any better then stock earbuds. As long as your positive your getting a good seal and they don't sound good to you then you should send them back and try something else. You also might have gotten a defective pair for them not to sound any better then your sony buds.

You might as well get a headphone amp like an airhead or CHA47 if you purchased the ER4s. If you have the ER4p, then you might have a defective unit because for me the sound coming straight out of my portable is deep and clear. I just love this sound!!! So do yourself a favor and get a CHA47 modified for etymotics.

The etymotics, much like the Grados, have a signature sound that either you like or you don't. I don't like the absolutely flat frequency response of the Etymotics, I prefer headphones that are a bit more opinionated. Not as opinionated as the Grados, but you get the idea.

are you wetting the white plugs.
i put them in wet then immediately take them out and wet again then take out again and wet again by now i twist them as i put them in . yes three times one after the other . perfect sound. I listen to no other headphones now ,except sen580 when i dont need isolation.

oh when you have gotten them in properly the isolation is excellent.

then i have full bass and stunning sound.
i cannot get a seal first time and never even close if you dont wet them. it took me 2 weeks to learn what i needed to do.
until you get it right its not good sound.

make sure you are getting full bass and excellent sound then if you dont like them fine but the difference between correct and not correct is very ordinary v's fantastic

good luck

ER4S I cant tell you how excellent these are for me. yet when I first put them in it was very ordinary

I have no idea if you are talking about the 6s as i have never seen a pair. BUT im sure you must be sure that you are getting the correct seal as well to hear them correctly.

I own stax electrostatic
sen 580
er4s
sony cd3000

I listen to the ER4S as much as i can
the sony are for sale , the sen580 are fine when isolation is not what i want. [answer the phone

I think the ER4S have the top end of the electrostatic's 80%
and the bass punch of the sen580 with amp but much tighter and more detailed.

I RATE THE ER4S AS THE BEST HEADPHONE I HAVE EVER HEARD

elektrobank,
I really have to believe even though you think your getting a good seal that your really not! You neglected to tell us what model Etys you have. A good seal is pretty much guaranteed with the foam tips. So if you have that option go with them first.

Wow, this guy is almost as excited about Etys as I am.

Granted, I've never heard any other high end can except for the Grado SR-60 but I can definitely agree that the Etys are fantastic sounding. Now that I've upgraded the power supply on my CHA-47 my portable setup is sweet as hell. Too bad the D-25S has practically no battery life.

Once I get my home setup up and running I wonder how the Etys will sound then.

I have the ER4P. I've tried them with 4 different sound sources, but my discman seems to be the best.
I tried wetting the tips and that didn't make a difference. I am using the silicone tips, I can't seem to get a decent seal with the foam tips. I am getting a lot of bass and a very clear sound. For some really good recordings they sound great, it's just that the sound doesn't really impress me all that much and there are only a handfull of CDs in my collection that actually sound good.
I think I would prefer a headphone with a more open sound and one that I can enjoy with all my CDs, especially when listening to rock and techo, which the etys sound the worst with. My favorite sound for listening to music is to play it on my B&W speakers in a big open room, the sound is just spectacular! I want a headphone that can most closely replicate this sound. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I don't know which B&W speakers you have, but the few I've heard tend to be dynamic and perhaps slightly warm. Try the Sennheiser 600s with a good amplifier. If you want a high value amplifier, send a private message to JMT and ask about one of his amps. If you want something more expensive, you might try a Porta Corda from Meier Audio or else a Headroom Cosmic, neither of which I've heard but both of which have excellent reputations. It sounds like this is going to be a portable setup, which is why I'm suggesting all portable amps.

My other recommendation is to listen to the HD 590. They are really easy to drive and there is really no need for an amp. But you will reveal its full potential by buying any amps since they are so easily driven. By the way, I'm selling mine because I'm planning on upgrading to HD 600 with a powerful amp. If you are interested, you can always PM me.

Sure it's fun. It's also illegal in many places.

... and highly dangerous. i mean, i know it can give you that cool movie feeling, but just don't do it. it is bad enough that there are naturally bad drivers like me out there (homeland security will always remain an illusion as long as i have my drivers license)....
