Most depressing song/piece

Un Bel Di, or anything from Madama Butterfly (especially with Maria Callas). I listen and the kleenex come out. I don't even get through the first act. When she finally commits suicide I'm a basket case. When I put it on, my husband runs in the opposite direction, he hates watching me cry. But although it breaks my heart, I can't really call it depressing, it's just too beautiful.

Buried Alive- Otep

This is totally mind blowing, very manically depressive, but I seem to like it in some strange way.

I've just recently discovered Otep, I normally listen to nice Female Vocals, but Otep has just captivated me in some strange way.

Check out the Buried Alive video, and other Video's on their site, there's also some 30 second samples on iTunes of all their albums.

Best wishes,

Paul.

Jeez, Absorbine, is that the one with the line "They're taking her children away. . . "? I can't remember if it's the Lou Reed song, but it's pretty appalling.

Oooh, let's brighten the corners some.

"Dead" - Pixies
"Mister Grieves" - Pixies
"Chained" - Pixies

-- Goodness, but Doolittle has some depressing songs on it.

Has anybody mentioned Nick Drake yet? -Yeah, you knew it was going to happen.

I think those two pieces are rather depressing.

OMG! I instantly though about Elend - Silent Slumber as well when I saw this topic, though it's not 100% classical. In the end it starts to get really wicked and threatening. Didn't expect anyone else to post it though. Seriously, that composition is suicidal. It's almost hypnotizing to listen to that when in a down mood, seriously worth checking out, heh. Some others would be tracks Angels of Distress and Quiet These Paintings Are from Shape of Depsair (slow tempo metal with orchestration) and various later works from Ulver, and track Soutu from Tenhi (neo-classical piano composition with some strings, very very Depressive as well).

All the previous ones, especially Elend are sad and depressive purely because musical factors, not due to lyrics. The Elend track has only some haunting female choirs and voices, and the other recommendations have vocals in minor role as well.

Castles Made Of Sand - Jimi Hendrix

There was a young girl, whos heart was a frown
’cause she was crippled for life,
And she couldn’t speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she could stop living,
So she decided to die
She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore
And to her legs she smiled "you won’t hurt me no more"
But then a sight she’d never seen made her jump and say
"look a golden winged ship is passing my way"

And it really didn’t have to stop, it just kept on going...

And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually.

Man, Axis: Bold As Love is way better than most people give it credit for. It, by FAR, has his most beautiful tracks, having both this AND Little Wing.

And, while not exactly QUIET, good old Nirvana's high on the depressing factor.

Mahler's 5th symph. Trauermarsch. In gemessenem Schritt. Streng. Wie ein Kondukt. Is not a good pre-party warming-up.
