New Head-Fier
Pros: Midsection, It's basically FREE,
Cons: Lack of Bass,
I'm not sure if this is the same model I got with my iPhone 4s or not. There have been tons of different models of these buds released for different i-devices. The ones that I received with my 4s are (In my opinion )  absolutely worth at least 30-45 $ in my opinion.

No they don't sound like my SENN HD 600 by any means at all, but for an earbud they are exceptional. The mid - section sounds nice to me and the detail (although not much) is far better than any dollar-store ear buds I have ever tried on (And trust me I have tried all sorts).

What is holding it back from being 5 stars is it's bass (these really have nearly no bass) and the slightly-generic sounds in the highs. And no I'm not trolling when I say these are some of the best ear-buds ever made. (Ear-buds )

Pros: Nice Soundstage, Deep Bass, Euphoric, Mids, Forgiving
Cons: None, just maybe a little bit too warm at times.
This was my first open headphone and I fell in love with it the moment I heard it. I would say it's a rather dark -sounding headphone with a really pretty midsection. It has a tight, well defined bass that tends to do quite well with low quality recordings (but does not extend really deep). It does exceptionally well with trip-hop artists such as Massive Attack (In my opinion).

This is the best budget for under 200$. It will work with a phone, and even though sennhieser recommends this, It sounds the best when plugged into a slightly better sound source like my MacBook Pro.

It does benefit slightly from a DAC or AMP, but not by much.

Also, people say this sounds better than the HD600 when un-amped. However, That is really not true in my opinion. BUT it's still is a great headphone nonetheless.

Pros: The most open I have listened to, Energetic Fast Attacking, Mids, Detail,
Cons: Comfort, Treble response, sub-bass is lacking on some recordings
The sound on these is absolutely stunning directly through the headphone jack. It may or may not benifit from an amp, all I know is that I have spent about 30-40 hours listening to Pink Floyd like a complete fool. Over, And over again, So I can tell you these headphones sound really, really, good. Initially, the treble was a bit harsh but since I like listening to music at low to moderate levels the sibilance really is not to a (Headache-like) level. I don't care what anyone here on HEAD-FI says, These are some worthy cans.

Now is this going to play skrillex without being harsh?

Absolutely not, The treble is too strong for electronic music. I will say however, Slightly more moderate electronic music related genres like Trip Hop and Acid Jazz (Flying Lotus, Massive Attack,) sound absolutely stunning. On the soundtrack "me Yesterday//Corded" by Flying Lotus I could have sworn the paino was playing right next to me and that the vocals were placed  infront of me. The bass was very pleasing and controlled without muffling vocals and the soundstage was well seperated.

Is this a bass-head can?

Not really, But the bass behaves very well during good recordings. It is, however, lacking sub bass but most open cans are not very good in that department un-amped anyways. For being un-amped you really can't ask for more ha ha.

Will this satisfy my audiophile needs ?

I don't know man are you picky about sibilance?

Can I use this as a studio monitor?

It's treble is elevated by about 5db, why would you want something that someone else is not hearing? I also notice the grado boosts some frequencies for general music enjoyment so no.

All in All 4.5 because (Bad Comfort )

I've been listening to new SR225e's for about 2 weeks.  I'm used to Senn HD598s so it's quite a bit different.  What I am finding is that I'm getting ear aches which is obviously a problem.  I've been using a couple of different small amps (Modi/Magni and microStreamer) but am now testing them running straight out of my iPad, without external amplification. I hope that will help. Or maybe they are just too energetic for me. Or maybe I'm too old or too used to those laid back Senns.

Well GRADO really does not need amplification.

People say that an amp can make a diffrence but sometimes an amp can make it even more aggressive and with an  impedance below 50ohms I don't think your missing much in the dynamics department.

My schiit vali is a bit more on the brighter side so using it with an already bright headphone is retarted.

Listen straight off an ipad for about a week and if you still don't like it then turn it in. YOU DON'T want gear just gathering dust! Dueces!

I think it's the amps that will be gathering dust for a while.

Pros: Frequency Response, Detail, Build Qual.
Cons: Treble, NO soundstage, Bass is too boomy, Aggressive and unforgiving
A headphone originally designed to monitor, Yet has been pushed to audiophile territory as a beginner headphone.

Although recommended, The ATH m50 is actually very boomy in it's presentation and will always be aggressive. It's primary goal is to give you an adequate amount of detail during mixes in a studio and NOT  to enjoy/listen to music.

Yet people STILL recommend it, claiming it competes with headphones at twice its price range, and offering it to people that don't know any other headphone but their skullcandy earbuds or Beats by Dr Dre.

When coming from a headphone as bad as BEATS or skull candy, the M50 sounds like an open-aire headphone. In my opinion, This is where all the hype comes in. Since you have never heard a halfway decent headphone in your life you tend to assume this thing sounds like it's 300$. But it's really not the case.

In the world of audio fidelity, The more you pay for something, The better it sounds (well, usually if you buy from a good brand). My un-amped  HD600 does a better job than the ath-m50 for casual music listening...But that headphone IS actually double the price of the M50.

I know, comparing it to a headphone double it's price is not really fair, But In my opinion there are better options for 100 bucks. You can get a  Sennheiser HD 558, or even a GRADO sr 80i which are both better options.

If you put the bigger aperture Shure HPAEC840 Replacement Ear Cushions on the ATH50x the sound is completely different sounding-all the muddy flabby bass goes to a precise sound (in fact all the ranges become more precise). As soon as I replaced thestock pads the sound was so neutral and precise. I have a Fiio E07K amp with it and only tweak up the bass and it's fantastic.

This is truly one of the most ignorant comparisons of any headphone I have ever read.  Not only did you make apples-to-oranges comparisons between price to such an extent that you were comparing the m50 with headphones that cost twice or even triple the price, you were making apples-to-oranges comparisons in the type/kind of headphone as well.  You didn't compare the m50 to a single other closed headphone.  Why are you even here?

What you've written does more to confuse and deceive than it does to educate.  Honestly, what you've written is a detriment to the reader.

Pros: Fun Youthful Sound, Bass Is Tight, Pretty Mid-Section, Extremely forgiving, For 60 bucks you can't really beat it
Cons: Not neutral at all, Very artificially colored in the upper treble, Weak Bass for most,
I had this headphone for 2-3 months before purchasing more serious cans.

I found these to be better and less conjested than my ATH m50 ....... (Oh boy I said It!)

They seem to provide a nice mid section and a colored treble that sounds ok but does not extend as deep as some cans will. Infact, my HD 558s have more bass than these (and the 558s are an open can, This proves the aviators are NOT a bass-head can)

For 60 bucks though, they deserve 5 stars because they really sound like 100-150$ pair of headphones to my ears.

I absolutely recommend this headphone to begin getting into better audio since they are so forgiving they literally smooth up highly compressed, highly annoying music as much as realistically possible on portable devices.

Pros: Mids, Detail, Imaging, Soundtage, Balance/Accuracy
Cons: Clamping force, I have seen some say that the headband broke, Sub Bass
(Excuse me if bad grammar )

Sennhieser hd 600 review (So Far, No AMP.) *keep in mind I have never been a person who likes loud music, so the HD600s have enough volume directly plugged in for my ears. Not everyone is the same and it does not mean you are death. Im just accustomed to listening at this level because I believe you get more fidelity from doing so.
----------------------------------------------
Highs- Not as prominent as I want them to be. Very peaceful on your ears though, absolutely no fatigue and very natural. It seems the 558s color this area to a much greater extent than the 600

Mids- The most beautiful I have heard. Even directly plugged in to my macbook pro the mids are very detailed and natural, sometimes even sounding realistic  slightlyoverall  better than my SR 325is.

Bass/Lows- VERY good bass (atleast to me) lacking a bit of sub-bass but the mello highs help establish a good amount of body. This means, It never really seems like it lacks body although it’s sub bass is not as prominent.

Detail- On par with the m50, less fatigue. Absolutely brilliant
very_evil_smiley.gif

Imaging/soundstage- So far the imaging increases as the quality of the file does. This is a forgiving headphone but it does benefit from higher quality recordings. Good separation and soundstage, although a bit bigger would be nice. In the long run, the amp might give me what i’m looking for here :).

Compared to HD 558 (Modded foam pads) directly plugged in (NO AMP YET PEOPLE)

HD600>HD 558 Detail
HD600<HD558 Highs (The 558s are more aggressive especially during guitar riffs, and I like it better so far)
HD600=HD558 Imaging
HD600>558 BASS
HD600>558 Overall presentation, NO amp or DLC

But remember, this is directly plugged into the 3.5mm jack. Subject to change when my DAC/AMP arrives sometimes next week.

I received my shiit valid/modi amp.
Overall I am very satisfied with the result. The soundstage seems to have increased and I can now hear “layers” of instruments. I did not think this level of fidelity would be possible with a sub-200 dollar amp/dac combo and the HD 600.

Everything seems to be perfect. And I actually don’t believe it!

Highs- It seems like the dac/amp combo is slightly brighter than neutral and a tad more aggressive. To me, the combination with the HD 600, being more laid back,  made it absolutely perfect!

Mids- These beasts were already good without an amp. Now I am hearing the same amount of refinement and balance but with even more detail. It’s safe to say this headphone now  has more detail than my ATH m50s. Definitely getting to a point where they sound realistic.

Bass- Absolutely one of my favorite parts of this combination. The bass has been increased but has also gotten tighter than when directly plugged into the Macbook Pro. This is more noticeable with high quality recordings. There is enough “Thump” for most music, but I still feel it’s not proper for EXTREMELY (Slightly annoying and restarted) dubstep.

Imaging/SS- Is this a dream? I am hearing layers of instruments  and the wind around them. No i’m serious. Do i really need to upgrade further?

In direct comparison with an amplifier there is absolutely no competition with it’s little brother the HD558. I am so satisfied with this purchase I don’t think I will be upgrading in the near future. 5/5

You need a good amp. Get the STX...Its great. It will really make these shine.

I have found that an amp makes a very noticeable difference in the quality of sound these headphones produce, even if you don't intend to listen to them at high volumes. The drivers literally don't seem to be as responsive without an amp, so I'm glad you ended up getting one!
