Pros: good isolation to the surrounding, no sharpness
Cons: with some kind of music a little bit to much bass
The physical appearance of the K872 looks like the same as K812, but with little differences.
Contact pressure of the K872 a trace less, but I can not measure and confirm this.
The external damping is very good. I hardly hear the opening and closing the CD loading next to me.
The holder of the ear pads and the cover of the converter is changed compared to the K812.
The ear pads can be removed only by means of a small enclosed tool - the reason is the required tightness.
The K872 is so I was assured, fit with injected cable in the case, had this not been tried but.
Bass - very deep and dry, very good resolution, with a bit more pressure as K812, but not load or pushing.
Mid's - clear, very good resolution, nearly looks like the same as K812 but a bit warmer.
Heights - clear, very good resolution, a bit softer as K812, no sharpness.
Spaciousness, stage - wide-ranging, enough deep (for an headphone), space between musicians.
The K872 can be heard effortlessly long.
.....
I had heared a lot of CD/SACD's
Meyer Records Vol1 (no. 140); Meyer Records Vol2 (no. 160); Ester Fellner Via del Campo (Meyer Records no. 156); Allan Taylor, Leaving at Dawn (Stockfish); Jan Erik Lundqvist, Leonard Cohen auf Schwedisch #2 (Meyer Records no. 148); Hans Theessink, homecooking;
Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites, Holberg Suite, Sibelius: Finnlandia - Herbert von Karajan, Berliner Philharmoniker, DG;
Gustav Mahler, Symphonie No.1, Blumine, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, David Zinman, SACD;
Singer: Clearly, the respective pitch accordingly, especially with Ester Fellner and Jan-Erik Lundquist very expressive playing.
Orchestra: Broad staggered; good detectability; Heights not intrusive, well resolved; Mid's no negative anomalies; Bass punchy, dry, non-intrusive, cymbals and drums can develop a brute force with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.1 already, cellos and double basses plump but not bloated.
.....
Dimitri Schostakowitsch, Symphonie Nr.8, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bernard Haitink, DECCA
Track 3 „Allegro non troppo“
Transitions and detectability - violins, violas, cellos, contrabass are very well reproduced.
Good depth staggered arrangement - drums, timpani, cymbals.
In the fortissimo passages, the brute force of the orchestra is very well noticeable.
Bass punchy and reaches deep down, but is not intrusive or drawing.
.....
Camille Saint-Saëns, Orgel-Symphonie No.3, Berliner Philharmoniker, James Levine, Orgel: Simon Preston, Deutsche Grammophon
Track 3: 2. Allegro moderato - Presto - Allegro Moderato
Track 4: 2. Maestoso - Allegro - Molto allegro - Pesante
Detectability of individual orchestral groups very good, enough space between them, the width of the stage corresponds to a good place in the Konzerthaus, depth for headphones good.
Organ Passage good coloration, punchy, massive.
In the horns I could not fault it, punchy but in balance with the rest of instruments.
Drumbeats punchy, dry.
What I wrote above in Schostakovitsch, Symphony No. 8, applies here.
.....
Paul Dukas, Der Zauberlehrling, Berliner Philharmoniker, James Levine, Deutsche Grammophon (from the CD above)
Track 5: Der Zauberlehrling
This piece fully confirmed my impressions above.
Bass is reproduced dry and not oversubscribed.

I use an Marantz SA 7001 KI CD/SACD player and an own build WNA MKII class A headphone amp.
Some of my music are on hybrid SACD's (CD and SACD sources)

Hi FritzS, I wonder if you can briefly compare them with HD800? I know those two are very different headphones in construction, but I am curious if you have found K872 brighter or less clearer than Senns? Lets say from point of view where you want to get the most revealing pair suitable for testing other audio equipment and its sound class (dynamics, transient responses, etc.).

Sorry, I don't have Senns to compare that directly - I had heard Senns HD800 and HD800s some times ago.
To long time between to give an vote.

Now I correct the Google translate - I use http://www.dict.cc/ and my (small) knowledge of English
I hope its a bit better now! :k701smile:

AKG K812 Pro
Type: open.back  dynamic headphones
Sensitivity: 110 dB SPL / V
Rated impedance: 36 Ohms
Max output power: 300 mW
Cable: 99.99 % oxygen - free with genuine LEMO connector
V- WCBV @ 94 dB SPL = 300 mV
Magnet: 1.5T
Net Weight: 390 g
More about: http://www.akg.com/k812-1308.html
--------------------------------------------------
My first impressions that can not yet be final. And, I accentuate always, these are my personal impressions without any claim to absoluteness!
High-quality packaging, covered with black cloth, hinged lid, fully molded tray, headphone stand made of laminated wood.

The essential parts of the K812 Pro headphone are made of high quality aluminum. By a gimbal mounting, the seat fits perfectly on the head shape.
The bracket can be adjusted by means of screening. The seat is good.

The K812 Pro is designed as an open headphone. The openness is not visible on photos, because the perforated back cover is additionally covered by a fine mesh, the driver is also protected by a fine mesh. In a way, in my opinion he is closer (in terms of openness) to the legend K1000 than the K/Q7xx series without its disadvantages. Of course, with newly developed 53 mm drivers of all previous innovations (eg, magnet 1.5 Tesla, lighter coil wire, etc. ) are included with.

The pads have approximately the same inner diameter as the K/Q7xx series but are constructed differently, include the ear perfectly and closed with a kind of lip to the head. The cover of the pads is velvety, leathery (a reference to which material they use, I dont found), comfortable to wear .

Tonal the K812 Pro are best headphones I had in the house to test so far. It is in any case to be classified (ranged) over the Denon D7000 (also ranged over the Beyer T1 as I could compare this with in the pre-test ). This refers to my test of pilot run model ( AKG ) and the first hearing impressions and does not constitute a finally statement.

As I recall, he is tonal ranged over the K1000 legend. Alone, the bass of the K812 Pro ranges noticeably down much deeper . The comparison with the K1000 regard to the openness of the stage I can not reproduce, since I have no K1000 available and memories I want to leave me any way.

The K812 Pro is neutral as it should be for a studio headphones, but also relentlessly against bad recordings, errors in the recording - which indeed corresponds to the actual purpose .

The audible sensitivity - my headphone amplifier WNA MKII with 15 Ohm output impedance is the difference in volume level for K712 Pro rather low, I just have very little to regulate (direction down) to the same volume to achieve.
........
First impressions sound to see with caution since no burning in period.

Sara K. " Hell over high water" SACD -DDD
Tend to track a noticeably brighter and richer in detail and better, finer resolution than the K712 Pro.
Neutral, profound, punchier but not over emphasized bass.

Liszt Orchestral Works , 2CDs , ADD
Berliner Philharmoniker , Herbert von Karajan , recorded in 1961 , 1968, 1976
Very high and fine, detailed resolution of sounds. Expansive deep bass, dry, without the boom in the mid- bass range (as sometimes occurs when Denon D7000) .

Comparisons and impressions regarding the spatial representations stage will coming soon, please be patient, I will check here some of my impressions after a few days again. Now I'm a few days so just listen and take notes. If I heard, "a block of my test pieces", I report. So far as I always did with my hearing test!
Photos will follow soon, I need to edit (examine, reduce resolution).

PS: Regarding the Availability, as far as I know,  next week the first copies go to the dealers and processed the pre-orders in order. The production in Vienna operate at full stretch. Please bear with!

Impressions Part 2

I am referring mostly to details of recordings that I know very well and have often heard with different headphones. I describe here my feelings here.
Pink Floyd, The Wall, 1979
A few highlights :
CD1 Track 1 , 1:40 to 1:50
Echo of the singer - right, left - precise, clear plastic
CD1 Track 3, finally
Helicopter - "I pulled down my head, in spite of headphones"
CD1 Track 4 - only Live can sound even better
CD1 Track 5 - finally, the cries of children, audible right outside the head in space
CD 1 Track 8, Mother, one of my favorites - with perfect "heebie-jeebies shiver"
CD 1 Track 7 , guitar strings sound metallic correct and not wrapped in cotton wool around - as if they were playing live in front of me.
CD 2 Track 6 , the door knocking sounds very realistic, live character.

General:
At Pink Floyd music abundant background noise are perceptible, precise, plastic, spacious (some with 3D effect) reproduced. Between individual voices and instruments is enough space, they are reproduced clearly and distinguished from each other. The overall picture remains homogeneous.

Marianne Faithful , Blazing Away, AAD , 1990
track 1
Applause, clapping of individual hands are very good audible, it does not go below a noise floor .
Track 3 , 0:20 to 0:30
delicately battered drums brass, metallic and very authentic.
Track 8 , 2:50 to 2:56
The lightweight dab the drums brass with the stick very well resolved, metallic, authentically.
Drums - very detailed, individual cymbal well of each other audibly separated, highly differentiated as did the musicians.
Magic of Himalayas , Mystical Scent , xxrcd ( JVC , Japan Import )
The Ultimate bass test , this CD brings the most impressive bass my collection in itself , makes even the legendary Telarc recording " 1812 " and the Japanese drummers (such as Kodo ) in the shade.
track 1
The very deep rumble of the drums is very impressive place (for a fully open headphones).
Track 1 with greater volume, not overdriving the bass noticeable.
The rest of the CD, punchy , accurate bass, instruments delimited, with enough air between them, the sound still remains homogeneous. On this CD "walking" some individual instruments between right and left, back and forth, which is mapped from Pro K812 very well spatially .
The "black" deep rumble on some of the recordings will be played very punchy.
The stage is wide, spacious, the voices of the singers and instruments are staggered in space.

Pros: good fitting on the head, nice design
First quick impression, without longer burning in time - a little bit more deep bass as Q701 with:

Update:

My short Conclusio frist - at the moment the K712 is the AKG flaggshif (K702-65 anni are limited and K1000 is obsolete).
The bass is the best of all AKGs headphones I ever heared. Over all the K712 comes very close to the D7000, so I cannot say who is better, they are different.
.......

The K712 is hand-crafted in Vienna (Austria), pre-selected transducers, 3 dB improved low end performance, soft genuine leather headband, open back dynamic headphones, sensitivy 105dB/V, 10 Hz - 39.800 Hz, 62 Ohms, max. input power 200 mW, cable 3m 99.9% OFC (from the cover).
Enclosed accessories: Additional coiled cable, black velvet lookig carring bag, adapter 1/8" to 1/4".

The Pads of the K712 are not angled as the pads of K701, Q701, K702. I have no K702 Anni, so I could not compair them.
.......

The K712 brings this passage a bit more powerful and (if I do anything wrong imagining) an a little bit closer to me. The Q701 (with original pads) sometimes seems in direct comparison a little bit "thinner".

The Planets op.32 / Montreal SO, Dutoit / Decca, DDD, 86 / Tr. 1 - Mars
https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Gustav-Holst-1874-1934-The-Planets-op-32/hnum/5131961
K712 more of blackness, massive, trumpet horns aggressive than the Q701

Misa Criolla, Josè Carreras, Philips, Tr. 1 & 2
K712 punchier in the bass, drums show more body, the voice of José Carreras hardly shows a marked and reproducible change.

And prevent it from being so one-sided for some POP fans

Steve Vai, Sound Theories Vol I & II
https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/Steve-Vai-Sound-Theories-I-II/hnum/9825226
Here, the K712 can finally show what it can do - there's so right from the post that rips!
(translate from german: da geht so richtig die Post ab, das fetzt!)

The K712 seems to be for rock & pop fans a "must have"!
The AKG K712 is of the headphones I've heard so far, been the most pressure coupled with the openness of the 7xx series.
Since no K550, K271 MKII come with - even if you gently rotate hearing something quieter (you should no longer constantly exaggerate).

Le Sacre du Printemps, Igor Strawinsky (1882–1971), Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, Gustavo Dudamel
https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Igor-Strawinsky-1882-1971-Le-Sacre-du-Printemps/hnum/7589152
Massive deep drumbeats (a step in direction to D7000, but not over-emphasized), horns sometimes aggressive (as they should be).
Spatial broad.

Amber Rubarth: Sessions From The 17th Ward
https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/Amber-Rubarth-Sessions-From-The-17th-Ward/hnum/2952935
Dry drum beats heavy, Chello corporeal, percussion - the sometimes very hard knocks are very well reproduced.
Wide-ranging spatially staggered singer at "eye level".

One of my Milestone Test CD's now inserted "Quincy Jones Back On The Block" (Tr. 1 & 2 prologues Back on the block) and turned up a track louder. Punchy and deep - and that really thrilled!

Misa Criolla, Mercedes Sosa, DECCA
The deep pounding of Indian percussion instruments comes across very authentic. Mercedes Sosa's voice sounds very full-bodied.
Stage fanned wide.

Roger Waters, Amused to Death (Tracks 1,3,4,5,7,8,11,12,13,14)
K712 a trace fuller as Q701, more bass, despite the same sensitivity of 105 dB / V seems a tiny lane louder (because the sensitivity at 1 kHz is measured, a consequence of the enhanced bass range), basin (brass) metallic silky

......

Now after a burning in period about 90 hours, I play'd my mostfull bassheavy music I have (big asian drums - with D7000 blows air between pads and ears trough) - Yun-Tian He, Mystical Scent
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/Yun-Tian-He-Mystical-Scent/hnum/4281185
track 1 and 9
with K712 the drums seems a bit bigger, deeper, powerful, punchy as with Q701
mids an highs seems me very similar to the Q701.

Before this CD I heared "Bettina Wegner, Die Liebeslieder" - at this music this extended bass is hearable, but hard to detect.
Mids an highs seems me very similar to the Q701. With K712 (and this music) sometimes I have the feeeling a little bit more detailed but in cross check are not surely detectable - my imagination?

The specified AKG increase in the low bass of +3 dB should be real available. Unfortunately I do not have measuring equipment to be able to measure the exact.

.......

compairing K712 with Q701 (using the K712 pads)

The K712 have a bit more (fuller) bass as my Q701 with the pads from the K712 - but its very hard to catch, the music sample must be right.

The K712 plays the "creaking" ("knarzen" in german) of the chello a little but more succinctly as the Q701 (with both implementations of pads tested).

These differences are very small - I will test them on an other day again to confirm my own impression.

My used test samples for this: "AUDIOphile Pearls Volume 1" http://www.musik-sammler.de/media/817284

.......

Meyer Records Vol. 1
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/Meyer-Records-Vol-1/hnum/7495951
Compareing K712 <--> Q701 (with K712 Pads)
K712 - bass is a bit deeper, a bit more resolved, free.

In the long time test (I heard quite a few of my CDs "up and down" in the meantime) the K712 revealed a fatigue-free listening. All images were played back in great detail. The bass seems "the right place" and is not bloated (what with the D7000 occasionally occurs).
The K712 affords no noticeable weaknesses. Otherwise error in the images are very probably noticeably - yes finally, that must be the meaning of Studio Headphones (the main purpose of the K712 Pro).

Roger Waters, Amused To Death, Tr. 12 "Three Wishes"
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/Roger-Waters-Amused-To-Death/hnum/1594911
K712 vs. Q701 with flat (K712 like) Pads
The hiss of the basin (brass) appears a bit more terse and a bit better resolved with the K712.
The deep roar of the Three Wishes comes with a bit more pressure at the K712.

In my compareson tests, mostly I play short sequences of a few bars again alternating with the two headphones.
For me the K712 ranks about the Q701 (both - original or K712 pads).

PS: You must seen all my test are subjektiv - for your own opinion you should compare this headphones self.
Less subjetive tests are ABX blind-tests with more persons - but this are hard to do with headphones.

First hearing test
AKG K550 - AKG compared to Q701, K501, K271 MKII, Denon AH D7000
Source: Marantz SA 7001 KI
KH Amplifier: Green Solo (GSP Audio), WNA MKII (DIY, modified kit)

Headquarters: Q701 Earpads have larger diameter, K550 earpads slightly smaller inside diameter and feeling softener - could become a littel more warm during prolonged periods. The two listeners capsules, they can pull out each about 35 mm, good screening.

Very good shielding against environmental noise (better than the Denon AH D7000).
Good fit on the head.

Tues 20th Sept 2011
K550 after about 4 hours birning in

Test at the Green Solo (solo has 33 Ohm source resistance and the K550 feels better at the WNA MKII with 15 Ohm source.)

Pink Floyd Final Cut (Version with - "when the tigers broke free")
Track 1
K550 background sound - cars are nearer the as with Q701
Jingling of coins and finely resolved clearly audible - the Q701 would resolve this a bit finer.
Track 2
0:30 K550 the beat is more concise than in Q701
Track 3
The K550 sound stage seems a little closer than with Q701, which staggers a bit more extensive.
Q701 have a little more air between the instruments and singers.
Track 4, "When The Tigers Broke Free"
Q701 dry and deep bass, more air between instruments, they are sold more clearly.
Track 5
K550 voluminous, closer direct - Q701 dry deep bass, better resolution, more air between instruments.
Track 6
as above
Track 8
The impact of the grenade at the K550 sounds more real.

Magic of Himalayas, Mystical Scent
Track 01 Sacred Book
K550 deep, powerful bass (but not as extreme as that of the Denon AH-D7000)
Track 05, 07, 09 - as above

From now on WNA MKII
Karajan, Beethoven Smphonies No. 5 & 6, Berliner Philharmoniker, SACD
Here it was found that the K550, the lower source impedance (15 ohms at WNA MKII) and a little more power the amps are better pleases.
The two symphonies, I listened to without many cross-checks.
In the heights the K550 is apparently not up as far as the Denon AH D7000, with the latter, I could hear the noise of older recordings.
Comparisons of the frequency response curves would be a hit - if these curves were already online.

Chuck Mangione, Children of Sanchez
CD1 very realistic with the K550. Punchy bass.

Generally, the Q701 has a more distant, wider sound stage, the K550 closer, more direct.
The Q701 seems to resolves finer. When K550 in some passages I have a sneaking feeling that he colored a trace. But I might be mistaken as well. It just sounds different than the open-K501, K701, Q701. It just sounds different than the closed Denon AH D7000 too.
Do not ignore the price differences!

A cross-check to K271 MKII (nearly similar to K272HD) - the K550 sounds better than the K271 MKII.

A hearing test, like this, is always a subjective snapshot of a person, and, moreover, depends on the daily constitutional.
A real assignment and struggled even more with this point allocation (as do some HiFi magazine) is bringing into question.

To be continued.

Please excuse my bad english - I used Google translate and www.dict.cc - the original is written in german.

Cons: connector only 3 pins

20. October 2010
I can not wait and all notes and "warnings" to spite, I made a sound check with no burning-in.
After about 1 hour a very detailed sound, more detail than the K701 - but I've known from the test of the K702 and has no significance - it will show whether the stops.
Music:
Marianne Faithfull - Blazing Away
Pink Floyd - Final Cut
Phil sings Maria Ola Magnell - Malvina

Short cross-check for K501 (which I bought used) - very musical and relaxed - but a bit less detailed.
Appendix: Philips CD650 modified / amplifier WNA MKII

01. Nov. 2010
The Q701 is currently in the "Burning-in" - let running continuously unattended not my thing - after 25 hours it sounds great - with some songs, even the D7000 left with nothing - for the K701 it sounds different and fresh, clear, more details, but as I said this can and will change even more - as will be seen.

06. Nov. 2010
After 70 hours, "Burning-in"
Very detailed, almost analytical sound reproduction, bass very far down but not as dominant as the Denon AH-D7000
Stage widespread, space between the instruments and artists.

Compared to the K701, both are on the system (modified Philips CD650 / WNA MKII amplifier) is very similar and sometimes lightly different, although it seems to me to show the Q701 sometimes a touch more subtlety. I still have to recheck with the Marantz SA7001 KI / amplifier GSP Audio Solo. What surprises me very dedicated to the "old" K501 behaves so well! Almost sounds a bit more "musical" as K701/Q701 also appear if the highs a little more restrained - I noticed only the background noise of "Esther Ofarim, Esther first Album record".

Music:
Esther Ofarim, Esther first Album
Max Lässer & das Überländerorchester, Überländer - above all, track 10 jaw harp, 11 jaw harp and harp, vocals track 14
Laureena McKennitt, An Ancient Music

Appendix: Philips CD650 modified / amplifier WNA MKII

07. November in 2010 over 75 hours, "Burning-In"

EMI - Paganini, 24 Caprices, Itzhak Perlman
Track 9
Q701 a trace silkier than K701
K701 a bit harder than Q701
K501 silky

Sony, Johannes Brahms, Concerto for Violin, 0p. 77, Isaac Stern, NY Phil, Zubin Metha
Track 3
similar to above, but hardly noticeable differences

WB, Quincy Jones, Back on the Block
Track 2, Back on the Block
Here the differences between Q701 and K701 are hardly easily identified, said the trend seemed to exist more softness in Q701.
The K501 sounded restrained, not because I wanted to adjust my level settings.

Appendix: Philips CD650 modified / amplifier WNA MKII

08. & 09 Nov. 2010 (to 80 hours behind in Burning-In)
Just relax listening to music
Esther Ofarim, Ether first Album
Loreena McKennitt, An Ancient Muse
Neil Diamond, Jonathan Seagull Livinston
Kari Bremnes, Erindring
Dire Straits, Brother in Arms
All the songs sounded very detailed, balanced, deep but not over emphasized bass, silky, non-sharp highs.
Stage-wide, air between instruments, singers.

Appendix: Philips CD650 modified / amplifier WNA MKII

--------
10. to 14 Nov. 2010 (at the 80 hours, "Burning-In" behind her)
Just relax listening to music
Ariel Ramirez - Misa Criola (two recordings)
José Carreras - Philips
Mercedes Sosa - Decca
Q701 bass very let down but not over-emphasized; drums punchy, clear string instruments and details; deep pipes very faithfully with significant blowing sounds; singers are well displayed (especially the deep voice of Mercedes Sosa); stage widespread, plenty of room (where you would on a headphone playback can say at all), positions definite, choir spacial.
Both versions very dynamic response.

Cyminologiy - per se & Bemun (Jazz, 2CD's)
The Klematics, Live - Brother Moses Smote the Water
All three live CD's kept their character. Very detailed, assessment as above.

One of the next steps I will return to the comparisons with the K701 and also address the Denon AH-D7000.
The AKG Q701 (K701, K702) is in my opinion the best in its price range (up to 500 EUR / USD) and can certainly compete with higher-priced headphones.

Magic of Himalayas, Mystical Scent, www.windmusic.com.tw - XRCD
This music cannot describe with words.
With the AKG Q701 - powerful, deep bass, more neutrally, if one can say with this music at all.
With the Denon AH-D7000 - such a profound and powerful bass I have never heard with headphones before. Despite this, the mids and highs not too short. The Q701 is missing something here the pressure at the very low notes. An ideal headphones in my opinion should be exactly in between.

The differences are such as in the test's not worth to be blind subjective.
For more objective results would have to use at least the verdict of several people.
The sound impression of the Q701 can still change, speak thus in some Internet forums, some owners suggest of more than 100 hours for the K701.
Comparing the K701 with the K702 (last year) was noticeably after 100 hours no clear difference.

During Q701, the hiss seems to be quieter than the D7000

Upper bass
The D7000 seems a touch over-emphasized

Bass
The D7000 deeper and punchier than the Q701

Stage
D7000 closer / Q701 spacious, open, airy

A complete list of my songs which I will use the test I put together this week as well.
A part of the list, I also published here:
http://www.stockhammer.eu/hifi/mymusic-main.php

I hear my well-known pieces of music to the smallest details that are often in the background, clatter of the valves of instruments, creak of chairs, (eg) with Pink Floyd "The Final Cut" jingle of coins, shuffling walk on pavement, etc.

Change Requests:
The current packaging may look good from outside but from unsuitable for permanent storage of the headphones. As is the case of K701 significantly more appropriate. My request to the board of K701 with the images printed by the Q701.
Since with high quality headphones, for headphones a lot of freaks want to control symmetrical - this means, the connections of the two capsules must completely separate from the plugs out to be - it would be good to prepare the headphones have that effect. In plain text instead of the 3-pin mini-XLR connector it should be a 5-pin mini-XLR connector looks like similar the AKG-K1000.

Pros: cable with connector
Cons: connector only 3 pins - not for 4 wire prepaired
After burning in the K702 sounds me very similar to my K701
I had a K702 for test 2009

Pros: very relaxed sound
Cons: little rolloff on both ends (treble, bass), compared to the 70x line
Compared to the Q701, K701, D7000 the K501 spend a very relaxed sound to me.
You could here with this headphone many hours without tiredness.
Compared direct with the Q701 I notice a little rolloff on both ends (treble, bass).
A very good headphone for little instrumentation ... e.g. a vocalist and a guitar and for some classic music too.
It's a headphone that headphone »freaks« must have.
Cons - AKG don't made them furthermore, it's obsolete.

I bought it almost good as new and checked by AKG.

For $60 paid it has to be a higher value rating! 5 stars at least. This headphone is great value at $200.

Still love my K501's with K601 pads...Perfect for chamber music. I'm thinking of buying a K712 pro or Annies for orchestral music, since the K501 is a bit bass light with Mahler & Shostakovich..
