Denafrips Ares II clipping MAJORLY with DarkVoice 336SE

Additional update: the line level attenuators work super well. They give me an extra three hours or so of movement on the Darkvoice’s volume knob. I also want to add that the sound pressure level issue WAS NOT being caused by the equipment but by a double ear infection + congestion. Two of the...

Looking for advice on Ultrasone HFI-680

Hi, George! That’s right. I’d forgotten that you wanted something with lower impedance. You could try the 58x instead, which are a bit cheaper and 150ohms. On the other hand, you could go the IEM route, with something like the Moondrop Starfield, Moondrop Aria, or Tin T2. All of these are...

Looking for advice on Ultrasone HFI-680

Hey, George! I might be able to help you a little bit. I haven’t heard the 680, but I own a pair of the 780, and they’ve always felt harsh in the treble to me. You sound like you’re also treble-averse, and if the 680 sound anything like the 780, I’m afraid that you’ll find them too harsh...

Denafrips Ares II clipping MAJORLY with DarkVoice 336SE

Update: I reached out to Denafrips support. They confirmed my suspicions. The Ares’ RCA output is 2Vrms, which is likely too much for the DarkVoice. By the way, I’ve searched everywhere online for the DV’s input impedance number and can’t find it. If anyone has that number, I’d like to know it...

Denafrips Ares II clipping MAJORLY with DarkVoice 336SE

Just gonna go ahead and add something to this... I've essentially troubleshot every component in the chain: cables, interconnects, headphones, amps, USB cable. I even got a TIDAL trial to see if something was wrong with Apple Music (what I normally use). I found that the The DarkVoice sounds...

Denafrips Ares II clipping MAJORLY with DarkVoice 336SE

Hi, all! It doesn't seem that my Ares II and DarkVoice want to get along. Music is clipping majorly, and the sound pressure level (forgive me if I'm using the wrong term here) is INTENSE. I'm getting listening fatigue quickly. Everything sounds slammy as hell, even the ever-chill 6xx. Has anyone...

Hi From Apos Audio & Announcing The Caspian Headphone Launch

Yeah everyone’s gonna have their own opinion on that lol. Personally I love it whenever an audio company uses a color besides black and silver.

Hi From Apos Audio & Announcing The Caspian Headphone Launch

No problem! I haven't heard the Magni, but they were both made by Kennerton so there are probably some similarities for sure. The cable is awesome. It sounds more clarified than stock cables to me, more refined. I agree with this video's take on it: . It's also really well constructed. It's nice...

Hi From Apos Audio & Announcing The Caspian Headphone Launch

I would say stellar bass and very solid mids. I'll still listen to my 6xx when I want that excellent vocal realism, but the Caspians when I want to rock out without feeling like I'm sacrificing mid-range quality like I do with the Argon. Hope that helps!

Hi From Apos Audio & Announcing The Caspian Headphone Launch

No problem! They're more reserved in the upper frequencies than the 6xx. They lean neutral/dark rather than bright. I use SoundSource on my Mac for EQ, and I've never found myself bumping the treble down with them. Depending on the song, I've boosted the treble at 16k when I want that extra bit...

Hi From Apos Audio & Announcing The Caspian Headphone Launch

Not at all! No slipping, sliding, or anything like that. They have enough clamp force that I can shake my head and they stay perfectly in place, even when I'm shaking pretty vigorously lol. The sound is wonderful. Before getting them, I used the Argon Mk 3 for rock and metal. These blow those...

Hi From Apos Audio & Announcing The Caspian Headphone Launch

I got these in yesterday and spent around three hours listening to them, and another three hours this morning. Overall, the comfort is great. The headphone isn't heavy to begin with, and the weight distribution is phenomenal. Thanks to the thick headband, I don't get any hotspots or discomfort...

Something more comfortable than Sundara for marathon sessions?

Thanks for the 6XX rec! I think I'm going to go with these. Everyone seems to love them. The clamp force is the most uncomfortable part of the Sundara for me. I've been getting "jaw fatigue" after a couple of hours, even after stretching them out. Hopefully they'll loosen up with some more...

Something more comfortable than Sundara for marathon sessions?

Hi, everyone! I got a pair of Hifiman Sundara about a month ago. I'm loving the sound qualities, but I find them to get a bit uncomfortable after marathon sessions. As a copywriter, I do nothing all day but sit at my computer, write, and listen to music, so I really need a pair of headphones...

    Looking for ~$500 open-back V-shaped headphones

Hi, everyone. I'm looking for a pair of ~$500 open-back headphones with wide sound stage and great imaging. I'm a fan of a V-shaped sound signature. I like fast, punchy bass. Nothing too analytical. I'll be driving them with the Schiit stack (Modi, Magni, Loki). Because I've got the Loki, I'll...

    Should I re-cable my HiFi 780s?

Hey, all! About ten years ago I sent off my HiFi 780s to have the cable shortened. I was in college at the time, and I was sick of stuffing the ~7,000 ft factory cable in my jeans every time I wanted to take my headphones for a walk around campus. I got the cable lopped off to a more manageable...

Want: closed-back, direct sounding headphones for punk

Hello, dear head-fiers, I'm looking for some closed-back phones that would be ideal for punk, hardcore, and for those times when I want to rock the hell out, all for less than $200. I own some AD700s and HFI-780s, and while those have tremendous sound stage and good separation, I'm now looking...

Looking for Head-Fi Members in the Nashville / Middle Tennessee / North Alabama / Kentucky area

Same here re radiohead. NIN have some of the worst lyrics imaginable, but the music/production is awesome. "The Downward Spiral" and "With Teeth" are good places to start.

Alright! My first listen once I get the Bravo V2 will most definitely be Kid A :)

For sure. After you get past the UI learning curve, the x3 is great. I've had it for over a year and haven't had any issues with it. Although, if the x7 has two SD slots, I plan to upgrade to that.

Looking for Head-Fi Members in the Nashville / Middle Tennessee / North Alabama / Kentucky area

Hey, all! I live in Memphis and would be interested to attend the next meet-up.    As for me, I'm using mostly portable things: Fiio x3, Ultrasone HFI 780s, and ATH AD700s for when I'm listening at home. I just ordered my first tube amp, the Bravo V2 (well, hybrid).   I'd love to meet some...

    Best mod for HFI-780

Resurrecting this thread because I'm looking to mod my HFI-780s, too. I got the velour pads and couldn't tell much of a difference in bass, SQ, etc. They are much more comfortable now, though, and though that might not be worth $25, it is an improvement.    Can dampening be done DIY fairly...

    The Fiio X5 Thread

I can't remember it taking too long whenever I've reinserted it. So maybe not "seconds" but I've never been inconvenienced by it ;)

It takes no time at all on the x3. Seconds.

    Bass-heavy closed-back over-ear $50-150 help

Hello, all,    I'm looking for a pair of closed-back over-ear headphones for $50-150. I use a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD700s and a pair of closed-back Ultrasone HFI-780s with the Fiio X3 player. 90% of the time, the ATHs and HFIs are great, but there are times when the HFIs--which have...
