I have $100 to spend at Amazon: What would you do?

Books!     You don't have to buy electronics.

Thanks!  I might give Birdie a big tree/condo to enjoy, but I'll probably DIY it once the shop is together.  I just want a little hideout that will be cozy with bosdy heat during the cold winters here.   I haven't had a cord issue with Mai Tai or Birdie.  They're exceptionally well-behaved...

Advice from doctor to stop listening to headphones

The vitamin recommendation makes me skeptical.   Though I am not a medical professional.   How about a second opinion?  If you keep the listening level low, how could that harm your hearing?  Again, I know almost nothing about medicine.

BOSE.....why does it get laughed at in the audiophile community? Are the products really that bad???

The Qualia and R10 are great headphones.   But I also think highly of the MDR-SA5000 and MDR-7509HD.  Not quite the same level of performance, but still very good headphones.   For the record, I'm still unhappy with Sony for dumping on SACD.

I've considered putting the cat on a raw food diet.  Still might, but she gets Iams and Fancy Feast wet food.  I also share chicken with her once or twice a week when I eat it.  Thing is, my family and I have had a number of cats who live 15-20 years and eat regular cat food.  It seems that...

How to tell what is broken on HD555

Yes.  Do you have a DMM?  Use it to check for continuity.  You can find them for $5 at Harbor Freight.   Most likely, you have a bad solder joint inside the cup.  Touch it up with a soldering iron and it'll be like new.

Thanks!  I'll give Flyin' Miata a look!   I've been poking around and the NAs seem plentiful between LA, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, all of which are fairly close.   I'd rather get one that needs some wrenching, anyway.  Not one with extensive mods or has been raced, but something...

Is it best to connect headphones as close to the source as possible?

The distance doesn't matter much, unless you get into long distances.  Nothing inside a living room would be that long.   What you want to do is plug the headphones into a good amp for them.  If the Sony's internal amp isn't powerful enough, it isn't going to sound good.

Just catching up on this thread.   First, CARB is awful.  They pulled me over at a mobile smog station once, when I had the RX-7.  This was about a week after I had it smogged.  I handed the guy my smog certificate and said that I wasn't going to comply with a test.  He wasn't happy, but...

    Thinking about getting stax headphones.

The issue with Stax headphones is that they're electrostats.  Electrostats have two stators with a thin diaphragm stretched between them.   You have to put a good amount of power on the stators for them to work.  A few hundred volts for headphones and the electrostat speakers will put a few...

It´s either great bass or great treble, never both!

Thirded.   I find the HD-800's bass to be very slightly boosted.  Though it's close enough to neutral to enjoy.  The bass is deep, clean and tight.   The T1 is boosted.  Enough for me not to like it on acoustic works, but it sounds good with rock and electronic music.  I like it enough...

BOSE.....why does it get laughed at in the audiophile community? Are the products really that bad???

Quote: Listen to some high-end gear.  You'll find Bose severely lacking in comparison.  I've heard Bose and I've been lucky enough to own good speakers and headphones.  There's no comparison.   Bose does not market to audiophiles.  At all.  They're quite aware audiophiles loathe...

What is Your Sennheiser HD800 Setup?

What does everyone want for christmas?

A cat brush.  A really good cat brush.   The cat isn't shedding yet, but her thick winter coat is going to be all over everything in a few months.

    Kim Jong Il is dead...

The only sad thing is that Kim Jong Il was never held to account for what he did.  He got away with it.   Though the greatest risk is probably a botched transition where factions disagree and the, apparently, barely functioning country grinds to a halt.  If people aren't eating, they will...

Broke in my car and stole things but..

File a police report and let insurance take care of it.   You might want to schedule an appontment with the chief of police to ask why they won't investigate it.  Go talk - in person - to a city council member and demand the same.  Ask why the police are sent out for revenue-collection...

tube, solid state, and hybrid kit ratings/reviews

The Bottlehead kits are point-to-point.  Don't be afraid of it.  PCBs are clean-looking and labelled, but point-to-point works well.  You have to plan ahead a bit, but it gives you a lot of flexibility for parts.  Axial or radial caps are no problem.  You can build very compact circuits, too...

    Linkwitz Pluto (v.2.1) loudspeaker build

Quote:   The Orion cabinets can be ordered or you can have a cabinet shop cut them for you.   I'm pretty close to having a local shop cut them for me.  My shop isn't going to be done for a few more months and I'd like to (finally) get my Orions together.  I have the amps and...

    Headphones and speaker amps!

The wires inside are usually coated with enamel.  Even if you strip off the colored plastic, the enamel remains on the wires.   I usually use acetone to remove the enamel.  You can also sand it off or dip it in a solder pot.

Can the burn-in skeptics leave us alone?

A special fluid that helps cables?  It wouldn't be some type of rendered reptile fat, would it?   That essay contains not a single verifiable fact and is complete nonsense.   Since you bring up George Cardas' reputation, I'd argue that he has no credibility.

Prescription meds very well might take care of it.  They're not the same as over-the-counter meds.   And that's about as much as I know oher than to tell you to get to a specialist.  Maybe this can be easily cleared up with a good diagnosis and some pills. Wouldn't that be worth getting rid...

    * Help: Best Inexpensive Tube (or SS?) Amp for AKG K702 *

You need an amp that has an output impedance lower than 62 Ohms, which is the impedance of a K-702.  An OTL won't have an output impedance low enough (read up on the damping factor if you're not familiar with it) save for the Zana Deux, which is outside your budget.  Its 6C33C tubes have a low...
