AME Custom: Argent, Radioso, Gravitas impressions thread
I've been listening to these part of the AME tour. Very positive first impression for the Argent Hybrid. I really like the bass response quality of the DUAL BA drivers, tight, resolving, but impactful. I've heard tighter and more resolving BA bass, so my first thoughts are this must have been...- negura

Review by 'negura' on item 'HIFIMAN Jade II Electrostatic Headphone and Amplifier'
I received the Jade 2 part of the tour organized by HFM. Many thanks for the opportunity to hear these at home and at length. In terms of look and feel, the Jade 2 have an industrial look and feel. Not very premium, but appears sturdy, and at this price range I think this is about right. The...- negura

CanJam London 2019 Impressions thread
Is there an Abyss TC somewhere? Yesterday's highlights were the Raal SR1a (summit fi performance even out of a single Vidar and was great speaking with Danny) and Headamp stand (BHSE/009S & GSX Mini).- negura

Benchmark HPA4 Headphone / Line Amplifier Impressions
The SR1a comes with its own adapter box. The headphones impedance is way too low to connect to amps directly.- negura

Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A
Indeed my experience with some DACs is digital volume control can cause a smoother/softer sound. So depending on one's perspective that can be a good thing or not. That said I did not try the LA/HPA4 as a preamp in my system. But I will try one eventually.- negura

Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A
I have quickly compared 2x AHB2 vs 1x AHB2 with the SR1a this morning. The source is my MSB DAC V stack, balanced, with Diamond preamp option. Audioquest SKY XLR interconnects. In my system: - With 1x AHB2 the only good option for getting nice dynamics and energy out of the SR1a is high gain...- negura

Raal Ribbon Headphones - SRH1A
Some first thoughts: I remember reading someone noticed the vocals are withdrawn/lacking a bit. I think this is a sign of under driving these headphones. Using 2x bridged mono AHB2s on low gain as I use them with speakers/other HPs, when I first plugged the SR1a in, I was not impressed with the...- negura

The dark side is complete. It's the first time I felt I needed to bump 2 x bridged monos from low gain to medium gain, with any speakers or headphones.- negura

The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread
I know, right. I also have the UMIK-1 for my speaker rig. They're pretty big full size speakers, but all I get is 24hz @ -6dB with a bump of a few dB at 38hz (room modal) and another smaller one higher up. The FR many electrostatic headphones have is just incredible by speaker standards. Not...- negura

The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread
I have both the L500 and L700 and compared them side by side. Both are modded to have a seal and a much more linear bass response than stock. The stock bass is just mid-fi with both, even more so with the L500. The amplifier I am using now is a Carbon. I can summarize that out of the two the...- negura

The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread
I have tried with a new layer of blutack, thinner this time, fully sealed. The bass extends noticeably lower, almost competing with my best planars. I will fine tune this over the next few days and post my final version of the mod with pics. For a more empirical approach, such as for someone...- negura

The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread
Well, the aim of the mod is to ensure getting the seal and hence good quality bass. The reason they have poor bass (imo), is there's no seal, and being familiar with Staxes, that was obvious to me since I got the L500. I'm afraid for quality bass, one has got to embrace the (ocassional) fart...- negura

The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread
If anyone is wondering what the measured result of the blutack mod is, this is with my L500 pair: Red = blutack modded (fully sealed) Green = stock Bye mid-bass crap/sub-bass roll-off. Welcome the occasional Stax fart, proper bass. The bass is well controlled, and a lot more linear now. Must...- negura

HIFIMAN Jade II Loaner Tour
I am posting my impressions after some hours with the Jade II: - very spatious stage, big drivers do this well. Tall/wide image, but not as deep as it is tall. - effortless sounding with beautiful midrange and detailed crisp treble. The treble is only relatively linear. There are some dip/peak...- negura

Despite not sounding similar to each other neither of these two sound anything like the LCD2C or any Audeze imo. Not much similar with HEK or Susvara either. Closer to HE-6 and/or Abyss. Things they have in common: dynamic, energetic, very lively sound. Very precise imaging and transient attack...- negura

QUAD ERA-1 Thread
I will eventually revert the Alara to stock condition and compare again with the Quad. I do think there's a certain element related to running these in for some hours. That's not the case with all headphones I have/had, but in this case it seems to hold ground. I agree about the efficiency - I...- negura

I had similar first impresions and yes they certainly did not sound similar. Those Alara stock pads are a significant performance downgrade vs the Quad leather pads imo and even with the same pads a few hours of the box the Alara did not sound as good as the Quads (the latter had more hours on...- negura
