Somic EFi-82 MT: Believe the Hype
Quote: Yep. I tried removing the dampening and the Somic logo. It didn't do enough for me. These really need to be fully-opened, I feel, to sound their best, but kudos to you if you can find a way to work it out.- CashNotCredit

Somic EFi-82 MT: Believe the Hype
...Perhaps you could cut out some slits in the back, opening it up a bit. I didn't put the caps back on and I don't intend on doing so. This *needs* to be open-backed (or at least more opened than it is). You could also put some wire meshing on the inside of the cups. I didn't get around...- CashNotCredit

Somic EFi-82 MT: Believe the Hype
Quote: Yes! Both leakage out and leakage in are much higher. I let my father use them (he listens fairly loudly, but not too far from the norm), and I could hear his music clearly and intelligibly from 4 feet away. The regular 82 is OK for library use if put at a quiet enough volume. Take...- CashNotCredit

Somic EFi-82 MT: Believe the Hype
Quote: Not sounding similar at all, I'm afraid. The Opefi (ditch/keep the name for the mod?) makes the MH463 sound like a crowded club. Tighter bass, bigger soundstage, and the treble comes out just the way it needs to. In an A/B, the 463 just sounds bloated and dark (could be the Turtle...- CashNotCredit

Somic EFi-82 MT: Believe the Hype
Just a lot of unscrewing and some adhesive. Remove the black and red mesh, then unscrew the three main screws. Pop off the driver enclosure and unscrew four more screws. Them pull off the back, screw the driver enclosure back into the...other thing (ear cup? housing?), and use adhesive to secure...- CashNotCredit

The Somic Thread--50mm driver open air full size cans pop out of nowhere, sound amazing
Quote: I thought the same thing. Then I messed with mine. Wow, am I glad I messed with mine. The bass resonances go away and the treble gains some gusto. Soundstage gets even bigger, for obvious reasons, but not awkwardly so. Yeah. It's pretty crazy. Too bad it's in...- CashNotCredit

The Somic Thread--50mm driver open air full size cans pop out of nowhere, sound amazing
If you open them up, there's so much dampening in front of the grille that it may as well be closed. (Perhaps we should move this to the EFi thread?) I'm trying to turn mine into a fully open headphone, and I've got it down pretty well as to how I'm going to do it. I got a quick listen without...- CashNotCredit

So I removed the backs of the EFi-82, making them an open-back. Oh. My. God. The treble and bass are fixed. The lower mids are fixed. Everything's fixed. Oh my. Once I find a way to turn them into an actual decent looking headphone that isn't in a...- CashNotCredit

The frequency response is provably neutral, so other factors may be responsible for that. Additionally, I have had a similar experience to Xprime4 with my neutral DAC and amp, so I really don't think this is an amp characteristics issue. The EFi just responds very well to amping.- CashNotCredit

Broke College student looking for a nice pair of cans...
If you're going to go with a Brainwavz HM5, which is an awesome headphone, get the Jaycar Pro Monitor. The HM5 was made by a company named Yoga, who called it the CD-880. They then sold this headphone to other companies to brand and make a profit. Because of this, the Pro Monitor Headphone and...- CashNotCredit
