Objectivists board room
A perfect symmetric square wave will have no DC component. However, clipping is caused by limitation of the voltage swing or current limited. In practice, you will need a perfect symmetry in plus and minus supply to maintain perfect symmetry. If not you created a DC offset. The amplitude of the...- dvw

Objectivists board room
TCP does not have a speed limitation. It is just a protocol. Howeve, you are right it is not suitable for real time application. The reason is when there is data loss , it will resend AND adjust the transfer rate. So if there is a lot of lost data, the transfer rate will get slower and slower. I...- dvw

Objectivists board room
A signal consists of multiple frequency. A clipped waveform has some DC component to it. An inductor (speakers) appearsto DC as just a wire. So the DC content is what destroys the speaker if it is large enough.- dvw

Yes Virgina, There is a difference in USB cables
If you consider jitter and bit error to be major contributing factor, then you don't even really needs to AB the cable. Bit error and jitter make very distinctive sound. It is not subtle at all. No need for "sensitive" equipment. it is a myth.- dvw

The voodoo-less cable thread. Reasonable cable vendors and reviews.
What you said are all true. However, continuity and corrosion are not the only flaw in cable particularly a new cable. He is complaining about a loss of bass not a subtle reduction or lower bass. I have experienced such loss due to a bent connector. On a 60 LP where they have recording "stereo"...- dvw

The voodoo-less cable thread. Reasonable cable vendors and reviews.
Bad cable? DC is as low as you can get. If your cable does not pass DC then you've got a problem. It is most likely a defective cable connector. Try a different cable or connection. There are bad cable and I had some.- dvw

Audiophile cables, an interesting question.
I can only tell you the factory name in a PM. Factories does not like outsider to disclose their client list. This factory is a fully integrated headphone manufacturer and has been in business for over twenty years. They have three locations in China manufacturing all components including...- dvw

Audiophile cables, an interesting question.
Not true. I know the owner of the factory and I visited the factory just 6 months ago. I have seen both the products in production. The factory also happened to be the only Apple approved factory in headphones. So I don't think any sourcing will change in the near future.- dvw

Audiophile cables, an interesting question.
Monster does not own the actual factory that manufacture Beats. It is owned by a third party OEM/ODM which also manufactures many other brands including some of the very highly touted headphones. Monster headphones and Beats are manufactured in the same factory though.- dvw

cables are placebo
HDMI cables have to be certified before they can bear the HDMI logo. There are cables with the logo but not certified. HDMI forum is actively pursuing violators and suing them for the violation. The boutique cables are most likely not certified, You will be taking a huge risk by paying a...- dvw

Cable burn in -- what are the arguments in favor, if any?
Maybe the reason why they are so expensive is precisely they cannot be measured or verified. The QA process involved might be hiring someone to listen to the cable and measure the soundstage with a ruler from their head to make sure they meet the spec. Or maybe it's a rip off?- dvw

Cable burn in -- what are the arguments in favor, if any?
If cable burn in is real, then we are in a big mess of troubles. Audio is low frequency application and it is not critical. But if cable burn in is real, that means the electrical characteristic changed somehow overtime with usage. Communication cables are specified for very specific...- dvw

The "Burden of proof" vs "A post describing how science works"
This will also depends on what has been claimed. If I claimed I heard a difference in the cable, do I have to prove the difference exists or what caused the difference. It is the explanation that people refuse to accept. The burden of proof does not help in this case. Am I not entitled to an...- dvw

High Fidelity
How true. There are only a handful of manufacturers making the headphones and the driver. The folks that make the Sennheiser and the AKG are probably also making the Beats and the other generic brand. One guy I know that makes a very high end brand uses the same driver and same enclosure...- dvw

How and why do members fall in love with second tier headphones?
Exactly. They came up with a way to implement large diaphram. This was done before as well. But this is still a dynamic driver. I would call this evolutionary not revolutionary. Same reason why the JVC carbon tube headphone is not revolutionary either. HD800 is one of the most linear...- dvw

How and why do members fall in love with second tier headphones?
Please elaborate how is HD800 driver design revolutionary? All I can tell is while the design is exceptional is far from a revolutionary technology. Why is it not possible to approximate the signature by EQ? What is so special that DSP can't approximate? Looking at the design. all I can see...- dvw

How and why do members fall in love with second tier headphones?
Why is there an obsession to rank or tier? People has different taste. If the person enjoy his phone the most, that phone is tier one to him. If you give me the very expensive totally flat phone, I might say it lack bass. So this headphone is now tier 2? I have bought and listened to many TOTL...- dvw

Tube Rolling. Worth The Effort??
This is indeed a very interesting topic. Like anything manufactured there is a tolerance. For tube the parametric tolerance can be quite large. In order to get a consistent result, engineers have to account for the difference between tubes. A good design will negate the difference between tubes...- dvw

Diy USb Cable With pure silver sound crackle, noise plz help
USB signal is differential signal. There need to be a common ground for it to work. In most cases, shield is the common. The key specification is the impedance as well as the the delay time. For audio application the USB port is more forgiving because most DAC chip designs are USB1.1 and not...- dvw

Diy USb Cable With pure silver sound crackle, noise plz help
USB cable is a digital cable. The impedance of the cable is critical. Unless the cable you used is compliant to the USB specification, it will be a hit and miss. The crackle you're hearing is the bit error. And the worst case of a bit error is that the USB device will not sync. DIY a USB cable...- dvw

How to hook up my speakers to my receiver? (with amp and switch). Low Volume/Overload when I try wiring instead of headphone jack.
you should not be connecting the amp directly to the receiver (in this case the speakers). The pop and distortion you're hearing is the clipping of the amplifier. You could damage your equipment by doing that. If you insist on using an amlifier then get a pre-amp to go with it. If you want to...- dvw
