No, I actually just think the material involved makes them sound that way to a point. I do want to hear the 500's though. It was between them and the LCD's when I signed up for the demo so I chose the one that was most out of reach. From what I have read I think I I'd like the sig of the 500...

I'm not sure this carries over to the HE-500's but the 400's literally sound plasticky compared to the bamboo LCD-2's. At first I didn't know what it was but then I realized it sounded like hollow plastic and that's exactly what the HE-400 is. (Aside from the drivers, grill, etc)

Just get the HE-400 and get some J$ Beyer pads, tames the brightness a little bit, bass is improved, lower and more volume to it. If you are very sensitive to it though I'm going to have to recommend you stay away, or try it and buy it. I really love these cans, resale is pretty high as well...
