Turn on the iDSD before connecting it to the iPod. I think that triggers it to run off the battery and not pull power from the USB connection.

Yep, I figured that part. The Mixamp is really just to get that 7.1 out of the PS4. When you fed the Mixamp out to your WA2, did you set the volume on the Mixamp to max?

I've been using my AKG K7XX for gaming on my PS4. I can't comment on how it sounds relative to those other options but I think it sounds good. I game on PS4 and I use an Astro Gaming Mixamp to connect the headphones to the console.

  Yep. This actually fine by me as I can then use the car's controls to play the music. The music format is easy to change if I decide to pursue it further. Nice to know that it looks like I can use the X5 like this if I want or need to.

I don't have any experience with the M4U1 or M4U2 but I've had the NAD PH50s for a couple of months now and I'm very happy with them. I really like their bass-- sounds nice and tight to me.

So yesterday I plugged my X5 into my Ford Focus's USB media input. I was able to read both the installed SD cards through the console, cycle through artists, songs, etc. the only catch was it wouldn't play anything. It tried but errored out each time. All the music on the cards was formatted...

Nice. If nobody reports any issues, I'll definitely update.   Anyone know if the X5 writes ID3 tags for things like play count, last played, etc.?
