Introducing Shanling M5 Ultra - High-End MTouch Portable Player at $589
May 14, 2024 at 12:18 AM Post #151 of 163
Hi I tried ordering it via that store but they had none available when I was purchasing mine so I went a head and bought directly from shanling website store and requested to value the package at 100$ it was shipped via dhl and arrived in 3days I think. I paid in usd and had 38$ in customs so it not so bad after all.
In total it came to 844 canadians vs 900$ so its even better deal that way…
Thanks for the info will keep it in mind since it looks like it will still be awhile before audioexcellence gets stock.

Finally finished my M5 Ultra Evaluation and came away smiling.

I'll pop open a cold one and make some snacks and check it out this weekend, looking forward to it!

Edit: great review once again and I did actually have to pause partway through to make a snack. The great thing about your reviews despite the length is you throw in everything including the kitchen sink. I never find myself thinking he forgot to talk about x, y and z cause yah cover the whole alphabet.

It truly looks like an awesome DAP and makes me long for something a little cheaper like an M2 Ultra if it ever comes. The M5 Ultra is overkill for my needs in terms of power and even screen size and I would like a little better battery life. I have funds sitting in a GIC to fund what I thought would be a Cayin N3 Ultra purchase that could be used on the M5 Ultra but they won't mature until next year so a long wait to buy. A Hiby R4 purchase I could swing much sooner but I find myself kind of wanting to wait on a possible R5 gen3. The R4 kind of feels like a tweener DAP, something to live with until something else comes along.

A couple of metal buddies, I listen mainly to metal genres and I can say without a doubt that its perfect for it, specially if you find trebble aggressive or guitars without enough tickness or bass

@Shanling Any Plans to incorporate a PEQ that would be at the top of my wish list and the ability of the volume light to change RGB colors depending on file quality 😀 Please 🙏 😀

Not in our plans.

The light on M5Ultra is a bit limited, so unfortunately no other functions we can put on it :frowning2:

Very curious how the new XM5 will compare to this... similar size, power etc. I need at least one of them in my life - all that power in a relatively small DAP is so appealing!

XM5 is quite unique in its sound signature. It's ESS detailed and dynamic, while having a warmed up midrange and bass. M5 Ultra is safer choice, but some users love XM5 for its tuning and put it overall as better than M5 Ultra.

Also found a nasty bug not sure if this has been addressed after the last update.
@Shanling

On main screen you hit the ❤️ and the unit plays a nasty POP and the player reboots.

Not something I would ever encounter on M5 Ultra.

Might be glitch of the menu, might be good to try to delete Favourites and put it again at the end of the list, if that helps.

Woaa mine doesn’t do that when I open favourites.

My m5u don’t want to go into usb dac mode when connected to my iPhone 😑

Which iPhone are you using and what cable?

I have the UA5 dongle from Shanling and find it really pleasing, despite more on the neutral side for me...
Never had a DAP, but now I feel like I want one so let me ask you good souls.
Just how much of a gap is there between UA5 and M5 Ultra ?
I mean sound quality wise, because functionality is a different game entirely.

Ty

M5 Ultra is a big step up from UA5 in the sound quality. Better DAC, better amps, better power management, it leads to better sound.

That bug went away with a factory reset all is good and smooth sailing ⛵

That Overture sounds intreaging would be a good unit to compliment the M5U.

After several days of using the player, I have some questions for the manufacturer.

The player does not find 5 GHz Wifi coverage.
All my other devices at home work fine. The router rebooted.
What will be the ideas?

The volume button light toggle mode displays the wrong color, red instead of orange or yellow, according to the settings in the menu.

As I understand it, this standby mode should put the player in sleep mode with all systems turned off, or the maximum reduction of energy consumption when the player is inactive.
Indeed, after some time, the indicator near the volume control turns off.
But according to my observations, in a day in this mode, with all networks turned off, the battery was discharged by 7-8 percent during the night approximately 12 hours, in complete inactivity in sleep mode.
I don't think it's normal. What are your thoughts?

When connected to charging, after a while player it automatically turns off, and charging continues. Is this normal?

As I can see from the tester, the player does not have a PD fast charging mode or anything else. After all, a rather large battery of 6000 Mah is installed here. DCP mode is present.

1. So you have some Wi-FI that's 5G only and it doesn't find it? DId I get it right? What router is it?

2. This is correct color.

3. Standby mode still consumes a bit of power, that's normal. If you want to reduce this, set device to power off completely.

4. If you are not using the player, yes, it will turn off during charging.

The router supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The player sees and connects only to the 2.4 GHz network. It does not find the 5 GHz network. At that time, all other devices at home are operating at this frequency.
Router from the ZTE brand

Will check on it.

I have iPhone 13 pro max
Official camera dongle with lightning charger and usb a. And a white high quality usb a cable from sony ps5 joystick

Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter

When I had H5 unit it worked absolutely fine in usb dac mode with this exact cables….

By any chance do you have a cable that's designed for work with USB DACs? Like our L3 cable or similar from other brand?

Will check on it.
But I also noticed that my devices at home, such as a phone or laptop, see the networks of neighboring apartments in different ranges. While the player sees them apart from the 5G range.
So, I think that maybe it's not the router, because the devices of other users have different models, and therefore the player does not perceive them anyway.

It would be interesting to know if anyone else here has this problem with the 5G network 🤔

Now that the M5 Ultra is proven that's it simply a wonderful player, love to see some of the functions expanded upon in a higher end MTouch future model a M66 Devine model!
