Well, looks like my replacement unit is seeing first sign of this battery issue. Just sent Sony an email - fingers crossed.

Short answer is no. Some believe the Zenipower battery is at fault affecting an isolated batch of the model. Two of my other friends have zero issues with their unit bought at the same time - yet mine crapped out.

I'm in the US and my pair was out of warranty by 4 months. Sony replaced it after reaching out to customer support and escalating my communications about the battery issue immediately on the first call.
