I was recently testing quarter wavelength resonant tubes to see how they would work in headphones. Measurements were done at 90 db at 1 kHz. 3,2 and 1 tubes were tested against no tubes. I didn´t try to get perfect seal because it didn´t affect midrange measurements. Saves some time. Tube length...

When interpereting these measurements you have to remember that my choice of earpads, type and amount of damping material is different from yours. Custom mic calibration was used. My DT 480 doesn´t currently have much damping inside cups and i´m using stuffed DT 150 earpads. I suggest that you...

I just got the MiniDSP E.A.R.S headphone measurement kit. I have get more familiar with it and REW software before i can post DT 480 measurements here. Sealing problems against silicone baseplate need to be adressed. First set of measurements of my pair shows almost non-existent distortion...

(WIP) Open source DIY over ear headphone

Hello. This an open source full-size over ear headphone. It´s still in early stage. Design was done in Inventor 2018 and i will later upload stl files here available for everyone. Design is going to be as modular as possible and most of the parts are going to be 3d printed. Baffle is shaped...

What the....? Ok. What do we call that? DT 748 Pro? DT 818 Pro? That´s crazy. How does it sound?

No i have not. I´m going to need special tool to get the backplate off from 48. So far 48 with these earpads has almost comparable bass impact and extension to DT 480. I´m going to put some vinyl on top of 150 earpads for improved seal. OG 480 earpads are some made from some sort of vinyl and it...

Earpads are taped on top of stiff painting canvas. I used Dt 150 earpads as a template to draw the outline on that canvas. Then i glued them on place and (added after taking that image above) stuffed blutak string between driver capsule and base canvas for sealing .

DT 48 + DT 150 earpads are proving to be good combo. Much more comfortable than stock E version earpads. After taking that image, i made sealing lip from tape to make it seal better at jawline area. I have to experiment more with these to see if i would get even better bass extension.

No change in bass response. I haven't touched eq for a long time for DT 480. I just sent inquiry about neodymium ring magnets to a seller. I'm seriously going to do the magnet upgrade to DT 48 and DT 480. I will post images when new magnets are in place before assembly.

I installed phase plug on the middle of the front grill on my DT 480. Stacked pads are keeping ears so far away from drivers, so i´m not surprised when phase cancellations occur on treble region. Subjectively this phase plug improves resolution and imaging. I made this plug from about 5 mm tall...

Those Vesper pads do indeed look tempting. Go for it. Luckily they can customize pads if needed. I would like to have those pads with outer and face side made from leather for good seal. Inner side would be made from more breathable material to reduce reflections. I think i´m going to get...

I was recently visiting in hifi dealer and had an chance to compare DT 480 to several modern headphones. The shop had both versions of Audeze EL-8, Audio Technica ATH AD5000X, Focal Clear and Utopia, Denon D7200, Hifiman Sundara, Beyerdynamic DT 440, Grado GS1000, Technics T700 (only multidriver...

DT 48/480 use ferrite magnets. They are not as strong as neodymium magnets at same size. https://www.supermagnete.de/eng/faq/Should-I-buy-a-ferrite-or-neodymium-magnet Is it possible for you take measurements of that magnet and see if you can find similar sized stronger neodymium magnet from...

I sent email to Beyerdynamic few months ago about that DT 202. Unfortunately they dont have any documentation of that model :frowning2:. Same goes for DT 480. DT 202 is propably more similar to DT 100. Good thing is that BD seems to have had some effort of putting some damping material on it...

I asked Beyerdynamic what was their first model to use computer simulation in its development. They said that DT 831 and 931 were first. I think these models were sold sometime on 90´s. Beyer still produces drivers for these. Those drivers have black damping material between diaphragm and...

Beyer did produce 8 ohm DT 48 drivers so it makes sense make 480 drivers with same resistance. Modding suggestions: 1) One mod DT 480 may benefit is vibration damping. Driver capsule is quite sturdy, but it is glued tightly on baffle plate so it can transfer vibrations to the rest of the...

With stacked pads DT 480 does admirable subb-bass considering that active diaphraghm diameter is less than 40 mm. More importantly bass doesnt leak with glasses. I have never got good sub-bass extension with DT 48. I encourage you DT 480 owners to post Youtube links to songs that you think it...

Taking Koss Portapro to the Limit (cool mods).

You can also try pad-stacking. Just carefully stretch original DT 480 pads over DT 100 pads and tape them together tightly. You will obviously get more depth for ears but it does make midrange somewhat laidback. Do experiment to see if you like it.

Good to hear that. I had once to solder a wire because i accidentally ripped it off after modding. Be careful. Now enjoy the DT 480 magic and wonder how can 80 years old driver technology do several things better than many modern drivers. It´s just amazing. Although there is still some sub-bass...

DT 480 driver baffle is not modular like DT 100/150. Driver is glued on the baffle. Trying to remove drivers from DT 480 is bad idea. This driver fitting thing got me thinking if it is possible to fit Tesla drivers to DT 100/150?

I have DT 48 & 480. Both are 200 ohm. DT 480 has gotten more eartime mostly because it has better comfort (DT 150 earpads) and bass extension. I seem to have extreme difficulties at getting proper seal with DT 48. It starts to roll-off maybe at 100 hz. But still they both have extremely good...
