How exactly does it work?

I'm using it w/ WMP7 and enjoying it, but that is on my HD580s connected to a computer with a noisy soundcard.

Does SRS WOW stand up to critical listening or is it a gimmick?

Its a gimmic... I have the hardware version, and boy does it suck. The crossfeed feature turns the whole thing into monaural, the bass is beyond bloated... the headphone output is NOISY...

There is a plug in, called something like the Dolby plug-in from Lake technologies, check it out.

I tried that plugin for Winamp but am using DFX now which sounds better to my ears.
