The technology would help support several sound formats like Dolby, DTS and MP3 within a single chip and also enable an external memory for manufacturers who can plug in their own software to differentiate products, Texas officials say.

``We have more headroom (in the chip),'' said Santhosh Kumar, project manager. ``We will be able to make people hear what they have not heard before.''

In technical terms, the industry can now offer a 64-bit audio experience, while the best available now is 24 bits, Kumar said.

--I might argue that the best available now is 1 bit DSD

--Does anyone know anything about this chip?

By today's standards, I would say that anything over 32bits or even 24 is an overkill.
