IGN review on D66 Eggos...
Apr 17, 2002 at 6:38 AM Post #16 of 28
The person who did this review claimed they were "somewhat harsh." I don't remember V-1 or redshifter making that claim. They also said that the headband doesn't pull the hair which is contrary to V-1's review. About the only thing in common with V-1's review is the bass. Frankly, I don't trust gaming sites to do good headphone reviews.

the d66 right out of the box have sibilance, or the "spitting esses" problem. this is what they might be talking about when they called them harsh. after about 12 hours of burn in the sibilance was completely gone, replaced with a very refined treble, on the verge of being bright but not quite. my guess is they did not burn them in before reviewing them.

the headband on my d66 does not pull my hair in the least.

the d66 is a great headphone. it is not closed, and works best with md, which it was designed for. they are expensive but for me were worth the investment. i like the short cord as it allows me to connect to my cha47 amp using a markertec cable, which transmits a fuller sound than the sony extension cable provided. unlike ign i didn't get mine for free but i like them, and give them a thumbs up.

p.s.
all the specs on the d66 box are in japanese, so unless someone can translate....

I think MiniDisco says they have a sensitivity of 106 dB @ 1 mW, which is perfect for MiniDisc. The D22's are 102 dB, which works fine, also. Since they block out a lot of outside noise, we don't need the high rating (108 dB) of Sony's high-end buds, the MDR-E888's.

Actually, I find the output of the D22's quite impressive. I find my KSC-35's seem a bit "soft," even though they have a similar 101 dB; since they are open, the KSC-35's have a lot of ambient nosie mixed in with the music in the real world.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a pair of EX70's, simply for isolation, but I have read that these buds have only so-so sound, compared to the 888's and my D22SL's. The Etys would solve the problem of isolation, but then there's the microphonic effect problem.

I think I'll move WAY back in the woods where cars don't travel to disrupt my listening pleasure....

superbaldguy,

so is rogain like your kryptonite?

if you are thinking about getting the ex70 i say go for it. i have a cha47 amp, r50 md player with line out, d777 discman, dd9 walkman, v6, d66, and etymotic er6 headphones, e888 earbuds.... so what do i usually grab when i'm running out the door? my trusty r70 md player and a pair of ex70 earbuds. no, they're not the best, but they're not nearly as bad as some claim. i modded mine with the foam/tape mod to cut the bass down. the ex70 is just the best all around portable workhorse headphone for me when i need isolation. although i have better cans available, sometimes i don't want to make a big production out of my portable music so i just grab the ex70.

I really don't get the full enjoyment from my various cans when I'm walking, unless I travel on the old train tracks, which is now the realm of ATV's. When I walk on the main highway routes, the traffic is unobtrusive, as if the motorists were trying to intentionally annoy me.

Of course, I often listen to my MD units and PCDP in my office, which certainly solves the noise problem, but that sort of defeats the whole idea of having portable audio devices, doesn't it? I think my next purchase will be the EX70's, in the SL-version.

Have you guys tried moding the eggos? I found the eggos are easy to mod. It is assembled by screws.

I put some foam in the ear cup. I think it improved the mid range and bass a bit.

dvw,
i tried modding my eggos too. i sealed off the holes with metal tape, and covered that with dense foam. there was no change in either isolation or sound, so i un-modded them (i was going for more isolation... i like how they sound already).

Hey, I'm thinking of getting the MD-RD22SL's because right now I have some normal earbuds
eek.gif

I was really wondering what SL and LP were! I heard it's to do with cord length or something.
I have an Intel Pocket Concert MP3 player and NOT a MiniDisc player. Will the MD-RD22SL's cord work with my MP3 player? Because I just want to connect the D22's straight to my player and if the cord is too short... Please reply with any info! Thanks a lot!

The "SL" monicker are only found on imported Sony cans. The D22's come with a 13" cord attached plus an option of adding a 38" extension if you aren't or don't want to use a remote.

With the remote attached, the short cord makes sense, as you don't have a lot of tangled mess to contend with or give you greif. The beauty of the SL design is that you have a choice of either using the remote or connecting straight into the unit.

There are a few select Sony cans that have this set-up - namely, the D22's, D66's, EX70's, and the E888's. The 888's, actually, don't have an extension - they're simply known as the SP-version. In North America, the EX70's and 888's have the standard LP cord, which is about a metre in length.

BTW, you can only get the Eggos as imports, since Sony does not make them as a domestic headphone.

SuperBaldGuy: I can order the Sony MD-RD22SL Eggos from www.minidisco.com but I don't think it gives me an option to add an extension. If I just get the normal SL cord which you say is 13" - and i don't have a remote - will that be long enough for connecting straight to my mp3 player?

I also have another question, would you recommend getting the Sony V6's?? Lots of people say those are good too... i just don't know where to find them.. thanks..

i don't know...IS 13" long enough for you? u are the one using the player, and will be carrying it in some pocket...if that pocket is further then 13" then i guess it's not long enough

the v6's are great cans for the price. u can buy them online...
shopping.yahoo.com usually has a great selection of retailers that carry them. if it's in your price range u should take a look at the sennheiser HD280 Pros i think they are about 30USD more, but are actually quite a bit better.

The MDR-D22SL's do have the 38" extension cord, as do all SL cans. The 888's do NOT have this, and are called "SP." FWIW, you could use the extension from the D22's on the 888SP's, if you want both.
