Back in 1986 Stax made the Stax CDP Quattro :

In 1988 they made the Stax CDP Quattro 2 :

Anyone ever own or heard these players?

Here are some ebay listings:

no picture of the actual player, no mention of original box or manuals. and as far as i saw from your original post, they havent made these in awhile, so how could this be new? seems to me like id be very suspicious of this ad to say the least. you could get a very good player for a little more cash brand new and id say imo you would be alot better off in the long run.

The person who is auctioning it off is pretty well known dealer in the world of hi-fi so a quick e-mail can let you know all the details you could want. I don't know if it's worth it, but for Stax collectors this would make quite a nice item to have.

Is it quattro 1 or 2 ? i would say quattro 1 16 bit 1986 , i owned the quattro 2
18 bit and to be frank it was the best sounding cd player i ever owned i sold it to upgrade my pre/power amps ( m/fidelity a3cr ) , the only problem i had with it was it would not play some cds , i know that many hi end cdps will give less than mint cds a hard time but the way my particular unit went about reading discs just became unacceptable , in closing though it may have been an fault that could have been repaired , mine was a well used unit when i got it second hand with a new laser installed ,but to be honest looking back now i wish i had never got rid of it.

kr, yeah i suppose if i had 800 extra bucks laying around and i was wealthy it might be neat to see if it had good synergy with the stax headphones. but i highly doubt it, otherwise i would think we would hear of these players much more often, although i could be wrong, but im just going on my experience.

From what i have read it looks like Stax continued with digital products in the stand alone dac area , i read a interview with Stax head chief and on his comments gave me the impression that when there cd players were on the market they were near the best of the period and i would believe that since i owned Quattro 2 , i guess that they saw a better market in out bourd dacs , i would love to see them bring out a new cdp it would really rattle a few other top end manufacturers.
If you can get the opportunity to auditon a quattro 2 do so , considering its 1988 vintage it is still dam good even today.

I liked the approach to sound stax had.

Still looking for a X1r or a talent BD:-))

I changed my main listening rack in the cellar.

Stax Quattro II -> ED1 Signature -> Stax SRM-T1 -> Signature Earspeakers or Sigma Pro

I like this setup very much!
