i went into guitar center and followed Jasper's advice. i forget the final cost, but there is an exact figure you can name that they will lower the price to on their computer for the 1212m. it was much cheaper than their normal price. i'm thinking around 155.00. can't remember the exact price - seems cheaper than the group buy.

back on topic, I say go for the 1212m until you can save up for a high level dac like the Benchmark DAC1 or Bel Canto DAC2.

Excellent, I'll be picking up the HD650s within a month or so (currently have 495). Glad to hear that it's a good combination, especially with a gilmore amp, as mentioned.

I don't think I'll be able to afford upgraded cables for a while, except maybe the Oehlbach cable, but I think i'd rather just save the $55 for a Zu Mobius or the Silver Dragon, sometime in the far future...

Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to search for this and try it.

$155? Are you sure about that? Jasper wasnt able to get any less than 185, and he had a friend working there. Or was it 165? I cant remember anymore.

There's a Guitar Center here, so I'll have to try this out in the next couple weeks.

It seems so disconcerting to be haggling over a standard retail product, though. Is this just how Guitar Center works? Do I just peruse, and finally offer something like "I'm willing to pick this up, but for no more than $1xx!", and then proceed to haggle the price, or is the $165-$170 price just a pretty standard thing that you can say "I'll give ya $170 for that," and they will?
