I really like electronica, with a bit of death metal thrown in sometimes (Amon Amarth and Sabaton are my go-to).  I'm BIG into the new Vaporwave/Future Funk/Vaportrap genres which rely on a lot of sampling.  I also do a LOT of gaming. I'm also in love with my Fidelio X2's bass and midrange and soundstage, but the treble leaves a lot to be desired.  I have been looking and longing for the LCD-2's as they sound like they would be a huge upgrade to detail and the trebles, but I've also looked at

  1. Audiotechnica's AD-2000x
  2. HiFiman's HE-400I
  3. Sony's Z7

Headphones I have used before:

  1. The legendary Audiotechnica ATH-AD700 - were my first pair of high-end phones, I have fond memories of them being solid performers but don't remember their sound signature.
  2. Sennheiser 598's - neutral (they're sennheisers after all) and excellent throughout but lacking in bass to me
  3. Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro - far too bright for my ears, uncomfortable
  4. Sony MDR1000x - currently have, a bit too intimate soundstage wise, but the sound signature is great for ANC BT cans.

Current chain is

Soundblaster Z > Audioquest Cinnamon Optical > Modi Optical > Magni > Fidelio X2's (BTW they sound great with an Audioquest Big Sur)

I plan on demoing the LCD-2s (and more, but not all I have listed) at a local music store with a CD of mine but I wanted to hear your thoughts, as you are the experts :)

I use the X1 for gaming, and I agree with you on the bass and sound stage, however the mids I find to be too recessed for music.I see quite a few members complain about the X1/X2 treble, but to my ears its a non issue.

For the record I listen to a lot of metal, however Im not familiar with the other genres you mentioned.

Im assuming youre referring to the fazor LCD-2s here.I used to own the pre fazor LCD-2s,so keep that in mind:

IMHO the LCD-2 strength is in its sub-bass extension...it is absolute magic with deep trance/psybient. For metal it was a tad slow for my tastes, and again the mids werent the greatest, but nowhere near as bad as the X1/X2.

The pre fazor version is quite dark which i liked for bright and poorly mastered recordings. If detail retrieval is your thing(and for gaming im assuming it is) LCD-2 isnt the greatest, nor is its sound stage.

I havent heard the three other headphones you mentioned.I do own the original ATH AD2000s,but apparently the two are quite different sounding,so I wont comment on the 2000x.

IMO what it comes down to is what elements of sound are most important to you in a headphone? We all want everything in a pair of headphones, but the reality is theres always a trade-off or two somewhere.

I really like the X1s for gaming as I said before. If I were you Id keep them for gaming and then get another pair for music....theres a ton of headphones out there,so if you can narrow down what qualities you want we might be able to assist better. Also a ballpark budget.
