Hi everyone,

My headphones broke and the speakers in my monitor are garbage. I've been looking for a replacement for my headphones and found a few but I don't know which I should buy.

I mostly listen to electro swing music and post rock but I also play games with lots of explosions and loud tank shots. I wouldn't want the immersion to break because a lack off bass. Seismic bass would be a plus but isn't necessairy

I will mostly use the headphones at home but I might take them with me. How much sound will leak with open-back headphones? Will everyone around me hear my music as loud as I hear it? I mostly care about the sound itself so if less portable/open back headphones are better I'll get a cheaper pair or earbuds for outside of the house.

So far I've found the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, the Grado SR80e, the status CB-1, and the status OB-1. Does anyone have any experience with any of those? And does anyone perhaps have some recommendations that fit my criteria?

I tried looking around for the sensentivity and impedance but I can't make any sense of it. I have no idea if I need an amp and what it does. I tried looking up some audio comparison videos but I cant hear any difference on my monitor speakers.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any answers.

The status cb-1s are great if you want closed back, and if you want open back I would recommend the philips SHP9500s. You won't need to worry about an amp for any of these headphones. Generally, you don't need an amp unless your headphone's impedance is more than 50 ohms. There are some other factors that may make your headphones need an amp, but I can't explain them off the top of my head, so if you want to know more about that check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDbh7yDVFL8.

What an amp does is amplify the signal, and provide more power to the headphones. This is needed if you have hard to drive headphones, because without one you may not be able to get your headphones very loud, and the sound may be a bit muddy and lack the depth it could have with an amplifier

Traditionally, many gamers here on head-fi will buy an ATH-AD700X, HD558 (or 598), depending on budget). The SHP9500 is also a very good choice. These are all open, which will give you a better soundstage than closed will. You won't want to use them outside the home because they do, as you mention, leak a fair amount of sound. Mad Lust Envy's Headphone Gaming Guide is here on the site and you might want to peruse it. It's quite good.
