Audio-GD Singularity 19

does it have a distinct sound? not really better or worst but something you will never get from a conventional delta sigma dac?

To me, yes.  But we're not talking huge differences.  Could I live with an AK4490 DAC and be happy?  Yep, probably.  The difference I hear with the Yggy/DAC-19/Singularity 19 is a better sense of location and space for the instruments.  Also, the R2R\multibit DACs all have better decay on instruments that especially make percussion and string instruments sound more realistic to me.  It's not a huge difference, but it's there.

I still have yet to try 4x, 2x, and NOS modes.  That will come later.

R-2R dacs have that live and more realistic sound to them - better sounding transients, more natural decay and those nuances that make the overall sound sound closer to analog than the typical digital sound. The degree and fidelity to which the DAC produces this will depend on the implementation of the DAC itself but I think that it's safe to say that any R-2R DAC should beat a reasonably priced delta-sigma DAC for sounding natural.

It is not the most significant difference in sound but once you hear and recognise it, you shouldn't be able to un-hear it. Delta-sigma DAC implementations can still sound good but there is a distinguishable R-2R sound signature that I personally prefer.

I think of it as sounding less 'digital' than the delta-sigma DACs are in general and closer to analog (vinyl).

Interesting finding so far... After a couple 2 hour listening sessions my initial impression is that this new DA-M1 module in the Singularity 19 benefits greatly from being left always on.  Even after 2 hours warm up I don't feel that it has reached thermal equilibrium.  There is still a bit of sibilance in the upper midrange, slight harshness to the highs, and the bass isn't hitting as hard as I like.  Unfortunately, 2-3 hours is usually all the listening time I have in the evening, after which I normally power my equipment down.  So, last night I went ahead and left the Singularity on and it's been on for 24 hours now.  When I started listening tonight it was immediately noticeable that the sibilance was vastly tamed and the bass was much more present.  Overall sound was much more balanced and neutral, which is how Kingwa claims it should sound.  It's sounding better than it has the past 2 days, which is to say very, very good indeed.

I'm going to keep it on for a few more days and keep checking back to see if there's any further change.  Suffice it to say, I will likely just leave it on 24/7 as I do my Yggy.

It's great to hear it is very, very good but when I listen to my DAC19 it is also very very good. New products tend to sound better always but in the end it is often a different sound. Better is difficult to claim in my humble view. It's all about taste and how it fits in your setup. I like the DAC19 more than the NOS19 but other people may have different taste. My DAC19 does only need 15 minutes to warm up  (Just kidding)

I have a DAC-19 (10th).  I've been careful not to say that the Singularity 19 sounds better than my DAC-19.  They both sound excellent in their own way.  I do like the fact that I can turn on the DAC-19 and within a few minutes it sounds good.  The S19 is more resolving though.  Reminds me more of the Schiit multibit DACs.  The DAC-19 has a smoother sound.  A lot more mellow.  I like both for different reasons and will be keeping both.

I will say though, at the current intro price for the S19, it's a steal.

EDIT:  I should also mention that I left my DAC-19 at the v6 software.  I wanted it to keep that smooth sound that I love.

This makes me even more interested to hear a Master 7 version with the new modules.

DAC19 alot mellow , more analog sounding then S19?The separation on S19 is better then DAC19 but is it still musical as DAC19? Trying to understand the difference and characteristics of new Software injected S19.

Power on the unit 24 hours X15 days, the burn in will finished.

Hi Kingwa, it took a while for the DAC-19 to burn in too, as I remember it.

Is NOS mode feasible with the S-19?

Also, do you implement a USB reclocker on-board?

The S19 had the NOS, 2X, 4X and 8X oversampling for users choice.
Its software is based on the Singularity 7, almost same FPGA functions, the sound flavor is close the Singularity 7, different to the DAC19 model, the DAC19 had been consider had the warm sound.
If users like the warmer sound, can setting on lower oversampling even NOS .

What I meant to ask is - does the S19 have the DSP algorithms, like the NOS19 to handle NOS in a proper way? Or is the S19 more like the DAC19?

Also, does the latest DSP incorporate the better algorithm for handling NOS (in DAC19, M7, etc)?

That's excellent news. Thanks Kingwa.

It is like the DAC19 latest firmware.
The NOS design will include in next firmware upgrade. We are plan to upgrade the firmware 1 times  every year in first 3 years.

hi kingwa, how does s19 nos compared to nos 19 3 different modes? (more similar to which mode or none?)

since s19 sound colder than dac19, will the s19 nos be colder than dac19 nos?

The S19 or DAC19 had different NOS design than NOS19.
In the S19 or DAC19, In NOS setting ,sound a bit warmer than 8x oversampling.
NOS19 had not warm sound , but soft or musical, even any NOS mode setting.
S19 is neutral or colder than DAC19.
Its sound flavor close the Singularity 7.
If customer want warmer sound as the DAC19, can custom order, we can adjust few parameter let them sound close.
