Hello Head-Fi!

HJALLLP! IM DROWNING IN HEADPHONES (ready for a book?)

Once the cyber monday deals went up I couldn't help myself but purchase several sets (way more than my budget allows) of headphones to audition, including a Schiit stack which I recently returned and will trade out for a more modest amp or amp/dac. (suggestions for your headphone choices also appreciated)

FYI I am a little bit treble sensitive.

Goal - to have 1 set of open headphones and 1 set of closed, both circumaural. any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am driving myself crazy at this point!!  I'll list my brief impressions with the headphones I've listened to so far so you get an idea of my tastes.

Budget- ~ 200 per headphone, preferred as cheap as possible, with exceptions.

Isolation needs - none

Listening Source - mostly computer (desktop or laptop) though occasionally S7 Edge

Musical Taste - Extremely varied (which is why its hard), mostly Classic rock, Trance and Dubstep, hard rock (Foo Fighters Linkin Park) and acoustic guitar / acoustic electronic - occasionally metal, Jazz and classical.

Headphones currently in my possession (feel free to skim)

AD900x  $132 (since returned but may rebuy?) - Love the huge soundstage and the warm, full mids - enjoying listening to rock and jazz on them, vocal trance, pretty decent bass but not enough for dub. doesn't quite seal properly on the top of the ear, mainly why I returned them.  Like that they are a little warm but maybe a little too much? lack some pop or clarity, dont know how to describe it.
^^^ would the massdrop K7xx be an upgrade? Fit my tastes?

DT900 250 ohm PRO $90 sale - Not a big fan of the V shape sig, but like the more forward bass for dub and rock, boy are these fun for EDM.  highs can be pretty grating on some songs but not all... and wish the mids were a little less recessed, some people say the highs mellow out with burn in, maybe some EQ?

DT880 600ohm Premium $169 - Love alot about these, the separation of instruments, clear beautiful vocals, soundstage, but find the bass lacking unless I really crank em up on the amp, would bass boost / EQ fix this or is it just not in the realm of the phones? Little analytical comparitively, but good for many genres.

HE400i $250 sale - Feel like this is the middle ground I keep comparing both beyers to, I know many people rave about these, they have a wonderful sound quality and performance on vocals, but maybe its cause they're planars, they just dont feel as immersive, the sound stage feels flat (and weirdly enough behind me).  A little sibilant or sharp in parts?  They do have more bass than the 880s, but on EDM that planar bass tends to be too analytical imho.  I do enjoy them alot, maybe with more time it will click but im not 100 percent sold, if it wasn't for the super deal I got...

HD598c $99 sale - Not bad, but obviously very different cause they're closed and pretty damn warm sounding would keep these mostly for travel.

^^^^^ Thinking of the massdrop AKG K553 pro to replace the HD598c, thoughts???

For all this craziness I thought about just saying screw it and buying the massdrop fostex Thxx, but id really rather not spend that money now - that would be crazy, right? right?

Sorry, I know its a lot of info, but I'm really going insane A/Bing and second guessing here.

Save me Head-Fi, you're my only hope!!

Thanks!

These are not the headphones you are looking for.

Have you thought about purchasing 2nd hand? Then you could probably fit a Sennheiser HD650 in your budget.
It's like the DT880 but slightly punchier bass, and a touch less sparkly on top - most similar to theHD598 sound signature but a lot more refined.

Thanks, I have considered the HD650, was going to wait until (hopefully) the HD6xx drops again on massdrop :)  .  Do you think the AKG K553 would be an upgrade from the 598c ?  Don't know if you've had a chance to listen / read reviews.

Nope, I'm afraid I havn't.
Ah... I just noticed you listed the 598c not the 598... skimmed too quickly first time round ...
(My opinion still stands regarding the Hd650 though. )

I havn't heard the 553, but I have heard the 550 and 551, and the HD650/HD598 (and DT880/990) is overall better than either of those.
And I've no idea if 553 an upgrade over the older ones, but these are guaranteed to be pretty huge and the main problem I read over and over with this series is that they don't fit all head-shapes.
If you can't get a good seal with these, you will miss out on the bass, so there's a tiny gamble there.
