I want to step up my game from the M40x to the next level. Can you help me? :)

Like I said there are no big cieties around me where I could try headphones in a shop, so I don't know what that "dark" sound dignature is like. The 650's also sound very good, but a lot of people describe them as pretty cold. The treble spike and the fixed cable of the dt 990's is a bit of a turn of to me. I also took a closer look at the AKG 712, but I'm not sure what to think about those. Yeah the X2's sound fun, but if I go for the reviews here if head-fi there are a lot of complaints about them as well.

I feel a bit lost...

dark headphone is like having the highs of the music in a different room
650s are not cold at all they are really warm and easy to listen to (sennheiser signature)
k712 are really good but the highs you might not like really up front

they are considered semi open so it's not a natural soundstage, the soundstage you get from this is more cause of the cup they have. so i don't know how to describe it i tried them out at a magnolia at best buy and didn't like the because i couldn't figure out what they were going for, mainly taking about genre and kind of music

yeah i have seen that also defective units but i think they did something about it lately

some one said

"I asked Amazon for a replacement pair and had two x2 headphones side-by-side. The pads were made of entirely different materials, and one was ripped. They were both new.

So yeah, they definitely were having QC issues, which is why Amazon, for about a month, cancelled all orders and stopped selling them entirely.

But it was only the Amazon stock and the problem has been resolved."

Ok. So it's the HD 650's vs. the Fidelio X2. Hard decision. Costs are about the same.

Also remeber the hd600-650 are 300ohms and the x1-x2 are easier to drive

I have the X2 & Nighthawks, X2 has more bass no sub-bass, NH has very good bass & sub-bass. The X2's were great until I got the NH's. If you can get the NH's for a decent price, by all means do it, just a better headphone ! HD-650 is going to take a amp for good results, not sure it is better than NH's even with a amp.
Keep in mind this is just my opinion and I am sure there are those who will disagree with me.

While having the same fixed cord issue .. I feel the DT880 Premiums are worth considering ..  The cords on the beyers are pretty good quality.. I have had my DT770's for nearly 4yrs and the cable is fine..(i use them alot) and the DT880's I have had for 3yrs no problems.. well built and very comfortable (for me at least).

the DT880's have a bit less bass than the 990's but the highs that I think are kinda brutal on the 990's are tamed quite a lot...some still think the 880's are bright however.. in my experience amping mine with vintage Kenwod KR-V106R receiver ... on decently mastered, quality material they sound quite nice indeed.. bright crappy recording sound gawd awful however.

I have no amp yet, but I was already thinking about buying one anyway.

What makes them great for you and why does that ,,dark'' sound not bother you? Maybe you could tell me what you like in the music in general and tell me why the nighthawk fit so well. In my initial post I described what I like and what bothers me (e.g. love clarity but that metallic sound of the M40x's and the extreme treble spike feels like somebody puts needles in my brain).
And what do you say about the missing soundstage?

I took an eye on them and here on amazon the price alternates between 300-500€ ($) on an almost daily basis.

From the lastest ATH phones I heard, including MSR7, IMO ATH R70X is the best..

What happened to the HSR-1000?

They are awesome !

Almost impossible to find them
Assuming the whole production line is now only making the headset version.
