I'm looking to buy a pair of Sony V6s in the next day or so, and am curious about the beyer pad upgrade. First, does anyone know if they can be ordered online somewhere, or do I have to go through beyer usa? Second, what do I do to remove the sony stock pads? Is it a difficult job at all? Will I be able to re-attach the sony pads if I need to?
Thanks in advance.

P.S.- Does anyone know how these would compare sonically to unamped senn hd495s? (powered by a soundlblaster live)

Some users would give you a grumble and tell you too search harder, cause this information is all over these forums, but since I'm such a nice guy...

As far as I can tell, the only way to get the Beyer pads is to call them at their 800 number and ask for part 442.704 or the VELOUR pads for the 250-80 headphones.

Here is a link to extensive instructions on putting on the Beyer pads once you get them.

I haven't yet gotten the Beyer pads, as I've only had my V6s for about 3 weeks, but I think I'm going to get them as the "hot ear syndrome" associated with the pleather pads is rather annoying. See the thread below for a debate about the pads:

As for the Senn 495s, it's funny that you ask because I ordered those exact headphones and returned them right before I got the V6. I had high expectations for them given Sennheiser's name. They sounded great out of my stereo amplifier, but out of my portables or computer sounded terrible, distorted at high volumes, no bass response etc. The Sonys sound like a good choice for your purpose.

Etronics.com has them cheap, $55. At that price, you have no reason not to buy them! Get em, you won't regret it.

It's not difficult to replace the stock pads and put them back on (just be gentle when removing the foam from the actual pad, its glued on). Just run a search for "beyer pads" you should come across at least on thread that explains the whole process.

MW--

yeah, avoid the 495s. They need a high powered amp to avoid sounding flat and lifeless, and a portable just won't do. You know, in St Paul, you may not need the Beyer pads!!!

Ha, tell me about it. This morning the windchill put temperatures below zero. Tons of fun walking to class.

Etronics will supposedly have the phones here within a week, so the long wait begins. Does anyone happen to know if the V6s take long to burn in?

I listened to mine from the get go and it took about 2-3 weeks before the treble calmed down...a little, and the bass opened up, from what i recall. Just don't blast them cuz they are bright cans.

Getting the stock pads that were on the V6 off wasn't hard at all, getting the beyer pads on the V6 was tough. I used a dime to help get the edge of the pad into the groove.

Yeah. Gloco's estimate sounds bout right. Important though---don't deafen yourself! The V6s are capable of the loudest SPLs of all my cans as they are meant for high powered studio amp equipment. And the closed design sends all the sound straight into your ear... With a low powered Sony CD player, these hit 115 dB at max volume. On my receiver they can go even higher. Easy does it!!

Perhaps we should not be so quick to recommend the Beyer velour pads upgrade. The stock pleather pads clean up better when your eardrums start bleeding from the V-6 at high volume!

Seriously- be careful. Those V-6's can be driven to ear-damaging volumes quite easily.

I appreciate the warnings. With my present 495s (very open) I tend to listen at volumes where I can still clearly hear the outside world. Considering this is my usual comfort level, is it especially easy to misjudge the volume the v6s put out, or is this just a warning to not try to blast the music? (That wasn't a very clear question...I'm rather sleep deprived at the moment.)

Oh, and a random question. Has anyone ever dealt with etronics.com? My order has been in the shipment pending status for a couple of days now, which I find odd.

MW---

no, you have the umm, Wight idea on listening levels!

Just remember that the V6s being closed will block out a bit of outside noise and will also sound a little louder at volume. The two tendencies should cancel each other out if you adjust carefully and set according to your current taste.

I have dealt with Etronics in a brick & mortar context and find them very courteous and reliable. They are very busy though and also seem to have been hit with many V6 orders in recent days. Give em a call just in case, but I doubt that they intend to cheat you.

Yeah, my V6's took a few days to get processed too. Patience is a virtue.
