"Open Alpha" T50 3D printed headphone project from MrSpeakers

I have Question. I Picker a Used T40 RP... Because it was cheaper and half of it was getting replaced. My Driver Is Round. I also Have a MKIII with the square driver I see here. I am Certain this mod will not work with the Round Driver. Is that a first gen thing?

I believe this is the first gen. Can you post pictures of them please? That's quite a rare find.

Did a test print at my local new start-up tech shop (the specialize in 3d printing, I know the manager. New start up which is why Im so delayed xD), turned out far better then I expected. I guess a high-end Ultimaker 3 Exstended does that heh, vs the 1st gen wood Maker-Bot Im used too. So I should have the real pair in my hands next week once my filament order comes in.

That being said, my 840 pads aren't going to cut it. So the question, I could just by brainwavs pleather. Buuuuuut Mr.Speakers Alpha pads. Do they really make that much of a difference? Just trying to convince myself the $60 USD is worth it... Plus least I could to to support Mr.Speakers for releasing the files

Also, Im thinking a rich purple, with a deep tint and clear coat?

Will Do, Probably tomorrow.

On Another note. In My experimenting with the T40 MKIII  I have. I added some Poly fill in the cups which helped the low end and balanced things up a bit. Then I put on the Mr.Speakers Padson.  I really dont want to Mess these Up I may order another pair as I have been listening to these and cant take them off. Music has depth. It almost images like speakers now and I don't feel like the music is stuck in my head. The T40's being the closed versions there is a bit more bass than the t50's from Fostex. There is a very good low end which makes these enjoyable for electronic, rock and other bass heavy music, it is not over powering though so it fits right in with other genres. The Pads From Dan made a HUGE difference. I will Hunt down a another "square" driver version to complete this project but I can say that Dan's Pads are a big Factor in changing the characteristics of the original Fostex Sound, These semi modded ones will find their way to my work desk.

Anyone have a source for Paxmate Plus in the USA?

If not, would this be an equivalent substitute: http://a.co/6CnxXyG

I have no personal experience yet, but one of the guys who actually made these, Arty McGhee(via PM) told me that the silverstone foam you linked is a good substitute. Also, if you search t50rp mod kit on ebay, mayflower electronics sells a kit with what seems to be the same silverstone foam with some other handy modding materials, one of them being some felt, not sure if it is the type you need, but you get the felt and cotton and Newplast for only like 8 bucks more than the silverstone foam on amazon. Mayflower electronics also sells it on their own webpage, they have several t50rp modded revisions that they sell and seem pretty nice.

Another material question:

For the stuffing in the cup, is this the kind of wool that would work well for this?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0099NYOAQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I also have some left over Acousta-Stuf that I could try:

What's everyone else using?

For those using the 2.5mm jacks, what cables are you using? Will any of the HD700 replacement cables work? Any recommendations for a good value inexpensive cable? (I'd like to keep it to less than half the cost of the Mk3s!)

Thanks!

I've used 100% natural wool, not even fully carded, to fill the cups. Different types of wool will have different degree of softness, which usually increases if the wool has been fully and carefully carded. At the same time, the softer the wool the less the fibers will be compact, which might be a good thing and result in an increased damping factor... however, it will also make filling (and closing) the cups a little be harder, since you will have stray fibers everywhere! A nightmare! Hence why I ended up filling my cups with a more compact (less carded) wool. The wool linked in your post is fully carded, but since it's been kept in the plastic bag for quite a long time (probably) it should be easier to cut it in compact chunks.

I preferred to stay "natural" and immediately opted for the wool (also used in the Alpha Primes, by the way) without even considering other alternatives... but you'd probably be served equally well by the Acousta polyfill. At the end, it's likely the quantity of damping material used inside the cups that will play a bigger role than the type of material itself... it would be certainly interesting to experiment with different quantity of material and check how that can affect the overall sound. As a starting point, I made sure not to exaggerate with too much wool inside the cups.

Thanks! Is the in-carded wool something you find at a craft store? If you don't mind sharing your source, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I printed my cups last night and am printing my baffles and rings tonight. I'm excited to get going on this project!

i agree with you on the wool, i used the stuff from amazon, it worked well
it seems you need less wool than poly fill to get to the same amount of damping
