Campfire Audio Vega (and Dorado and Lyra II) - Head-Fi TV

Using stock tips. Definitely foamies and stock silicone are at different ends of the spectrum.
With JVC spiral tips in the middle.

I need to buy a smaller size JVC for the Vegas and a recent cable I am using, for a better fit.

  Maybe

I will retire after A12+Vega. I refuse to listen to anything better for at least a few years.

Famous last words perhaps?

Indeed! I am completely satisfied. I figured that at this price point, it's all about different signatures. I could try to listen to others but I doubt anything will blow me away anymore.

Nice to see some members of the other threads I subscribe to here (@mashuto as well). Glad you guys have discovered the joy (and sound) of the Campfire gear - I imagine your wallets might not be so happy though!

The Vega were my first introduction to real TOTL sound, and have pretty much redefined what I consider to be good audio. Spent the last few weeks with a pair of JH Angie, and as amazing as they are, now considering trading then on to try something else out as they just aren't getting as much head time as the Vega. How sound so good comes out of one 8.5mm driver is a mystery to me, but I'm very much looking forward to hearing where the Campfire team decide to take it next.

As far as being a first introduction to real TOTL sound and redefining what I consider good audio... that's kind of my hope. Though I am keeping my expectations in check, diminishing returns and all. And to think I would have been totally happy with my IT03's had I not had any issues with fit. But I have been doing well financially so I figured why not. Though I am going to place at least part of the blame for my recent expenses on you, so you know, its your fault if they don't deliver!

The only issue is that I paid to have them overnighted because I wanted to be listening to them today. But fedex never showed up (tracking shows its been sitting about 850 miles away for the last 24 hours). Stupid fedex. Hopefully they will show up tomorrow so I can give these a listen and see what the step up from my current ~ $250 high end gets me.

As long as you don't have high expectations :p
The law of diminishing returns hit IEMs in this price range hard

Well, lets just say my expectations are high, but I'm trying to keep them realistic. I realize that even though these cost 5 times as much as anything else I own, I am not magically expecting these to perform 5 times better. Just hoping for a nice increase in clarity/resolution/detail along with what sounds like a somewhat unique sound signature (which was why I chose these over other options such as the andromeda, well that and the smaller form factor). And also just to hear what all the hubbub about totl is actually about, since as I said, $250 has been my max price point up until now.

My real hope though is that I will be satisfied enough to not feel like I need to buy anything else for quite some time.

Does someone have experience with both the Vega and noble K10 / Encore? Thinking of getting either one... I'm drawn to the vega's smaller profile and un-idiotic price.

Hope they do the trick for you. Give them time to get used to the thick sound ("brain burn in") and I'll be very surprised if you are disappointed.

Diminishing returns is very real, but there is something about the Vegas that just sound "right" to me, and puts a grin on my face every time I listen. The combination of thick juicy sound, bass and texture and detail retrieval is something special. Let us know how you get on!

How does it change the sound with different lengths? wider and deeper soundstage? how about the tonality? Thanks!

Well the sound signature is fairly even across the sizes.
The large bore takes care of that.

For me the different sizes are for fit as i use one size larger in my left ear.

Different earphones require a different size tip I find due to their nozzle size.

I also find my ear canals can get smaller when its cold or when I use earphones too much, in the summer I need larger tips.

So its not so much about many jvc spiral tips to get a different sound, they are quite a solid bit of silicone compared to spinfits or ortofon etc.

Its more about the fit and getting a proper seal for me.

And I just got them in an hour or two ago and listened to them for a bit with my phone and mojo. Very first impression didnt wow me. Which I think is because even though my expectations were I think in check, it was still a move up from something that cost 5 times less so I didn;t quite know exactly what to expect. First thought was also wow, this bass is huge. I dont count myself a basshead so it seemed a bit much at first.

Then as I listened some more I started to realize that yes the bass was big, but it really didn't overpower anything else. Its a very rich, full sound and very enjoyable. Having a second headphone line on the mojo was nice because I was able to do some very quick a/b ing with my it03. My takeaway from that is that especially for the price, the it03 is quite good. But I was also able to see some of the differences that the move to totl seems to bring. The it03 is definitely a leaner more crisp sound, but it just seemed like the crispness had this almost artificial quality when compared to the vega. Almost. And it just seemed like maybe it was missing something in comparison. Hard to put my finger on it. But I think the best word I can use to describe it would be that the vega just seems... effortless. In a very good way.

I know there has been some talk of sibilance, but I didn't hear any, at least not any more than I normally do from certain tracks that were already sibilant to begin with. And I skipped the foams right away (not a fan of foams and having to worry about replacing them) and went right to spiral dots (ml).

So definitely not 5 times the performance, and I have nothing else in the price range to compare it to, but I think these are very nice, they seemed very comfortable, and I am looking forward to getting more time with them.

Im not a big believer in burn in either, but whats the consensus here?

I think the consensus here has been a 100-hour burn-in, while 72 hours is recommended from Ken Ball (I think).

I heard the fully-burned in demo ones at CanJam, and heard an immediate difference when I started using my brand new ones. The bass is a lot more refined on the demo ones, but that was just my quick impression at the show.

In the short burn in time I've had so far, the bass is already much more refined and the soundstage is naturally wider and more detailed much more quickly... if that makes any sense. At first it'd take a while for me to get fully-immersed and appreciate the clarity, but now it's almost immediate, and it continues to improve.

Some here have said that burn-in with the Vega is more noticeable than most other IEMs or devices, and a frequency chart showing the differences in a new pair vs burned in ones was provided either by Campfire or another member at some point, I forget who.

And please forgive if I use the descriptive terms inaccurately, I am still a noob

Got it thanks.

Is there any recommended procedure here or should I just listen and enjoy and not worry too much about it as the sound evolves?

Don't worry about it :)

Yes burn-in will bring more balance to the sound sig and also smooth things a bit. I find after hundreds of hours the Vega are still energetic and powerful but also refined and yes delicate!

Initially they wowed me but tired me, much less so now they wow but don't tire (maybe my brain grew a capacity to take in everything they provide, who knows)

Anyway, hang on it will get better and you'll see it's not X times as good as Y or Z but simply one of a kind (IMHO) and that's what I expect of TOTL.
