Hi im Tom, After my 1st of 3 children 29 yr ago all toys had to stop. About 20 years ago my nice Amp and stereo died and i never enjoyed music since, switch to talk radio. Now my last son turned 21, I now can start to buy some toys again. After finding Head-Fi and some YOUTUBE reviews it looks like the Darkvioce 337 may be my first toy to purchase. I enrolled back in a Collage electronics class. I decided to build a headphone tube amp as my class final project. My collage is dumping a bunch of old electronics, and I seen cases and cases of old tube still new in the box packaging (BINGO) i have seen all the names in the forums about rolling tubes ( first time i'v ever heard of this term. I was just researching about the Darkvoice and tube rolling when my electronics instructor and the dean of the electronics department said they are getting rid of all the old stuff. I asked if I can have tubes to build a tube amp for a class project, he said sure, ("Tubes were before my time I don't know much about them"). I see I stumbled upon a tube gold mine!!!. old new military still in their boxes, TungSol, Sylvania, Bendix, RCA, GE, Raytheon, Amperex, Phillips, Ken-Rad,  more names then i can remember. I researched all the recommended tube part numbers for the Darkvioce 337 I read on the old Head-Fi Forums threads. My instructor gave me permission to come in early to pick out my tube i want, and boy am I picking.....

#1: my question is what (headphone)( pre-amp) AMP KIT should I buy as my first .( I can solder ) and i'm vary mechanical.

#2:   My instructor said i can have the old LAB grade power supply's they have both AC and DC power supply's ( I guess I can strip down one or two LAB power supply's to power my project. I can't see how I will get any cleaner , pure accurate power for my amp then this.) I can dual power supply left and right and even a TRI-supply.

#3: Is there a any (HOLY GRAIL TUBES) part number #  I should keep my eye on a grab for future tube AMP project i may have ?.

It looks like I have all the parts I need and more , I just need advice from some with knowledge to guide me on my first big project . After reading the last few days on Head-Fi  Forums I see there is hundreds of years of combined experience here, It look like i stumbled upon my 2ed gold mine of knowledge. Thank You

No offense - after all, this is a beginner's section - but you should've probably posted this in the DIY section of Head-Fi.

To answer your question, the simplest (and very good) tube amp to build starting out is Pete Millett's "Starving Student" tube hybrid amplifier.  There are very few parts and while the original tube became scarce and now is relatively expensive, there are variants available that use the ubiquitous 12AU7:

The original 19J6 tube can be found on ebay, even in matched pairs - simply search "19J6 tube".  As noted, they're now much more expensive than the $2 ea they were originally priced at before Pete introduced his design.

Here's a link to the schematic used for the 12AU7 version:

12AU7's average about $8-$15 for standard selections.  If you are looking at paying more than $30-$40 for a pair of 19J6's, then the 12AU7 might be a better choice.  (Or if you get them for free from your college.)

WOW, Thanks, all your links gave me so much info, love your photots of your Torpedo III build. As a first time build to learn ill start with your recommendation of the Starving Student Hybrid. My brain is in over load traveling at hyper speed .
