New Inear Prophile-8

Read all nine pages still not clear about the sound other than its clean flat and monitor like. Reminds me of the JH13 very neutral and natural.

Maybe this helps a bit, here's what I wrote to a friend about the Prophile-8. Take it with a grain of salt though, as it was only a rather short audition (< 1hour).

Its tuning is close to neutral, seamless and coherent. I heard the 3-4kHz region as slightly lifted (but less so than the ER4S) and an inoffensive peak around 7-8kHz, but on the whole it's a really classy and refined sounding IEM. Compared to the UERM, bass is similarly tuned, with its main emphasis around 100Hz and noticeable roll-off below 50Hz. It's a little less punchy than the UERM, which I'm ok with... but tbh, I'd prefer a tad more sub bass extension (on both IEMs). Lower mids are comparable to the UERM and upper mids maybe a tad more forward, whereas treble is definitely more mild-mannered and smoother (however, also less sparkly).

Sorry I forgot to mention the switches! Well, the bass switch basically lifts everything below, say, 200Hz a bit, so you end up with a slightly warmer tuning, but the same bass characteristics. I'd have loved for that switch to lift just sub bass, but alas, that was not to be. I also tried the treble boost in an attempt to get more sparkle, but the difference is only very subtle. On the plus side, treble remains inoffensive, even on boost.

When I saw the FR from Marco there were no peaks at 7-8K. there was a rolloff after 10K so treble is not aggressive or peaky. Its warmer than UERM. Detail retrival and layering is better.

Boring - If you are looking for fun sounding Prophile-8 is not right choice.

Quote: Its tuning is close to neutral, seamless and coherent. Yes thats the right way to describe it.

Well, I can comfirm a slight emphasis at 8kHz by ear.

The 7-8kHz emphasis may well depend on fit / tips. I tried two different pairs of silicone tips and heard it with both, but didn't have foam tips at hand. Anyway, the emphasis was by no means offensive, so not really an issue in my book.

Was this emphasis heard with sine sweeps or listening to music? Just wondering how you pinpointed the 7-8khz range

In this case, with a sine sweep. A stronger peak in that range, I can usually detect with my sibilance test tracks (Al Stewart - Coldest Winter in Memory; Florence And The Machine - Ship To Wreck). But on the Profile-8, the emphasis was only slight and didn't exacerbate sibilance, so I didn't notice it with these tracks.

That's why I called it an inoffensive peak: the sine sweep showed it was there, but I didn't feel that it caused any harm to actual music.

Thanks James, good to know

even in the "reference "setting the 8 isn't boring and neutral at all. It's the musical kind of neutral where bass even without the switch has good impact and punch

Hello everybody.

Can someone please comparing the Prophile 8 and Andromeda?

Thank you in advance.

A little bit of comparison today between the Prophile-8 from In-Ear and the S-EM9 from Earsonics. Both driven by the Sony WM1Z, the S-EM9 balanced and the Prophile-8 single ended because I don't have the adequate cable (nobody does at this stage).

First important difference is stage and music presentation. The Prophile has a wider stage that is much closer, surrounding you. You are in the middle of the music. The S-EM9 has a narrower stage, further in front of you. The music is still airy and well separated, but less involving and more laid back.

Mids have more or less similar clarity but due to the stage presentation, the voices on the earsonics sound more distant and very up close and intimate on the Prophile.

Bass wise, the S-EM9 has slightly more mid bass, but if you switch the bass on on the Prophile-8, the mid bass will have more impact than on the S-EM9. Subbass seems equally extended.

Highs seem similarly extended, but in neutral position Prophile-8 highs are slightly smoother, and if you turn on the high switch, they become similar, maybe even more edgy on the Prophile-8.

In terms of details the Prophile will have the edge, not that it had more details, but the fact they are more up close makes them easier to hear.

Finally in terms of speed, while the Prophile-8 is no slouch, maybe the S-EM9 has a very slight edge...if it does it is not obvious.

Overall, I would say that at this stage they play in the same category, but the Prophile drags you more into the music, and has the switch to adjust to preference.

Both among the top universals I have heard.

Keep in mind things could change if they were both balanced...

I was about to ask about the sound stage so you beat me to it. Thanks, BTW, good image.

Might be slightly off topic, but where did you get the balanced cable for the SM9? I can't seem to find anywhere that ships to the US for the  new Sony balanced. My WM1Z just came in and I'm excited to try it with the Prophile 8.
