The official FiiO reply to another user, on Facebook page, was that it *does* support apt-X.... Who's right? :)

The X1II doen't support APT-X by now. The colleague in facebook make a mistake before and will correct it soon. Sorry for bring inconvenience.
X1II is running Linux system based on MIPS architecture, which is just not supported by the licensor, although we do have the APT-X authorization.
It needs futher communication on whether it would be supported in the future.

I knew the back and sides were aluminum...I think my question was worded awkwardly. The front looks like it might be plastic. Regardless a nice case would be great to have with it or at least if they sold them separately.

Comparing the X1 II to the Sony A30 series which will be at least twice as expensive the X1 II is at least partially metal.  The Sony appears to be 100% plastic

What do people think about the quality of Bluetooth with aptX. Obviously, both transmitter (audio source) and receiver headphones or speakers would have to be aptX compatible. I've had many Bluetooth headsets and never been impressed with any of them. Does aptX suck less?

Apt-X is the best sounding bluetooth standard currently available outside of Sony's proprietary LDAC bluetooth.  Apt-X is rated at 320 kbps or basically 320 kbps mp3. If you listen to mostly mp3's then you should be quite happy with the sound quality.  
 
Apt-X has finalized a new Apt-X HD standard that is suppose to offer 24 bit/92 KHZ streaming quality and some products including headphones will be released at the end of this year or next year.  But as you said both pieces have to support it.

That is interesting. Thanks for the info. Most of my CDs are ripped to either 320 MP3 or Apple Lossless. I actually have one aptX compatible set of ear buds, the LG Tone 900. But I don't yet have any portable aptX compatible music player. I have an iPhone but apple does not support aptX in iPhone. Actually, I do have a MacBook Pro and I've heard that Mac OS X supports aptX so I suppose I could try that combination out.

Wow - just realized that the Powerer speakers I bought for use with my MacBook Pro support aptX (The Klipsch RPM-15). That is probably the best Bluetooth sound I have ever heard. For little desktop/computer speakers I am loving these Klipschs. 
 
I was just checking on the Mac - you just hold down the option key while selecting the Bluetooth Icon and then you mouse over the device you are connected to - and it will tell you the codec that it is in use - in fact it is using aptX. Interesting. Too bad Apple will not allow iPod and iPhone devices to support aptX.

The front panel of X1II is tempered glass. Yes, it will be protective case comes with the X1II.

I appreciate the information Fiio please keep it coming as I am very intrigued by the X1 II and possible new X3 and X5 units next year.  It is really great when manufacturers like Fiio are so forthcoming with information and take users input to heart.
