Hello guys,

I currently own a DAC/AMP from Schiit Magni2/Modi2 combo. Without a nice power hungry headphone these combo would be a waste.

So what do I look for:

Price range: up to 300 euro/dollar , of course cheaper is always a bonus.

Current Headphones: ATH-AD700 open air, I like these allot for gaming. And got the Superlux 662D, I like these for music. I am curious if there is a headphone that is better then these 2 for their purposes.

Allrounder would be the best since I game( mainly FPS) allot but listen also allot to music: genre mainly House/trace and pop, instrumental, basicly everything apart from rap / metal.

Allthough suggestion for seperate purposes is also welcome

Comfort: Something that i can wear for hours without having cramps or pain. I think i prefer velour pads over the leather ones. For indication of my head size the ATH-AD700 is actually slightly abit big for my head If I have it on and move my head fort and back I can make it move around. So something that has a tighter fit then that. And not something like my other old Superlux 662D, which gave me headache or ear cramps even after a short time wearing it

What I have considered and looked: Beyerdynamic DT770 pro 250ohm (129 euro), Philips Fidelio X2( 220 euro), Sony MDR-1A( 139 euro). At the moment I am leaning more towards the Byer since it has some decent bass, though bass is not my main concern and also make more use of the dac/amp. the dac/amp is probably a overkill for the Sony and Philips.

Any other recommendations?

Thank you

Update:  few months later I have revisit this topic due to other upgrades from my computer I decided to wait abit longer. But now is the time to look for one.

are you in a position to audition anything at all? always good to audition. If you have any local stores that will let u audtion with your gear, jump at the opportunity. Its not always a case of needing power hungry cans, it can be a case of the extra power allowing better dynamics and headroom for your cans. My oppo PM3 improves with amplification over just my ipod or my phone, and its relatively efficient, same can be said for my 7520.

Also what issues do you have with your current headphones? is something lacking in the sound? Or is it you have the head-fi bug and want to upgrade?

heya I dont really have a place near me where I can test stuffs out unfortunately. I might have starting to having this "bug", looking for something better. I got these 2 headphones for about 7-8 years, Though they are still working well. Just looking for something better basicly

For music listening and comfort, I'd recommend The Focal Spirit Pro. You might want to wait for their newest 'budget' headphone: Focal Listen. That one will also be beneath €300

If you will be listening to your music in a relatively quiet environment, you could also consider open headphones like the Sennheiser HD600, or the HiFiMan HE400s (which might be a bit over budget).

You should consider the AKG K712 Pro and the Sennheiser HD650.
The AKG has wider soundstage and better instrument separation, while the Sennheiser is smoother in the treble region.
Both are superb headphones, a step up from the ones you've listed and both will work very well with your MM2 combo.

Both should be within my budget will look into, thnx. How about the new announced Sennheiser lineup, are there any info about those, which of the new model will fair or potential be better then the AKG K712 pro and Sennheiser HD650?

None of them.
HD800S would be better than HD650 and K712 but it's a much more expensive headphone.

  Hello guys,

I am new to this forum and actually it is my first time I want to try out something better then just a regular soundcard. I just got myself a DAC/AMP from Schiit Magni2/Modi2 combo.
Without a nice power hungry headphone these combo would be a waste.

Save the cash now, keep saving or wait for good deals, and then try something else. Like the HD650, HE400i, EL-8, etc.

Heya,

Another recommendation for the HD650. seems these are really good, the HE-400i and EL-8 are for now abit out of my budget but maybe if there is a sale like u mentioned. But how are the HE400/ EL-8 fair against the HD650, for the premium price?

Few months passed I had to wait out for the headphone upgrade since I was upgrading my whole computer. But now it is time to upgrade. My budget is pretty much the same as it was that I want to spend on a headphone.

Seems for a Mid-tier range the HD650 and the AKG 712 Pro is recommend allot, with the AKG being the better when you do game allot with a better soundstage. After some more reading seems the AKG 712 Pro looks like a decent allrounder apart from gaming.

Still not decided between the two, although for the moment leaning abit towards the AKG 712 pro. Another plus is that it is about 100 euro cheaper then the HD650

Did any new headphones released in the past months that are comparable with these 2?
