Hi all

I'm new to this forum and I found my way here looking for a certain type of headphones.

I love heavy metal and I also love my Philips SHP2500 headphones that I've had for a few years now but I've used them strictly on my PC although I'd love to take em walking to work every day and listen to my favourite metal tracks. My range of metal/rock music goes from progressive rock to melodic death metal and due to the nature of the music (and my own understanding) I'm interested in headphones with a good soundstage, decent bass and clarity.

So I was looking for something similar to the Philips headphones that have just the right amount of bass without being overbearing and they sound overall fanstastic.
I've tried numerous mainstream headphones in shops much more expensive in the range of £20-200 and the only thing that sounded better was a pair of B&W P5 that belonged to a colleague who let me borrow them.

They would need to be a pair of headphones I can wear outside (I don't care what they look like) and that I could use with my mp3 player or my smartphone and I'm on a budget of up to $50 or there abouts.

I'd love to hear any recommendations! Many thanks for reading!

The only recommendation I can give in your price range is the Creative Aurvana Live (first version, not the second). Sound quality is great for the price, but fit and build quality are questionable.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I can see both the Creative one and the Philips have a pretty low frequency response 9-10 hz
Is that indicative in any way that they can reproduce good bass?

I've also considered buying a new pair of the Philips ones and then modding the old ones to shorten the cable but I don't know if it will affect the sound quality if I do that..?

Typically the specs that manufacturers give are not good indicators of sound quality; quoted frequency response is no exception. Good bass response is not just about extension, but also about other factors like speed, tightness, distortion, etc. The CAL! has a bit of deep bass rolloff, which is typical of headphones in this price range; odds are that your Philips do, too.

Shortening the cable won't affect the sound quality unless you damage the drivers, housing, or cable in the process. Another headphone you might want to consider is the Audio-Technica M-30X.
