I have decided to buy a new pair of over ear headphones, preferably closed. I have mainly looked at the Beyerdynamic DT 770, 32 Ohm version. I'll use them with my Mac and iPhone mostly, but will definitely use them with my basic Hi-fi system from time to time as well.

Are the DT 770s a good choice? I have seen some people saying they are a little "bass heavy", which puts me off a bit. Are there any other good options in this price category? I'd just like a great pair of headphones with crystal clear, detailed sound.

There's the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Plus, which has sound sliders that adjust bass quantity, so you can choose what type of sound signature you want. Also, there's the ubiquitous Audio-Technica ATH-M50X.

Basing thoughts on the Amazon price for the DT 770-32

There's the V-Moda Crossfade LP2

The ATH-M50X

Little bit more, but Shure 840 is also an option.

These are headphones I see recommended a lot that fit your criteria of being closed and are near enough to the same price.

The Crossfade LP2 are basshead cans, and not exactly great ones at that; you might as well spend a bit more and get the V-Moda M-100. I personally think they are way too colored, but they are at least worth a listen. The Shure SRH-840 are okay but a bit outdated in my opinion. If you're willing to buy used, I highly recommend the NAD Viso HP50; very close to neutral sound with tight, extended bass, detailed mids, and smooth highs without significant loss of clarity. It's my favorite headphone in its price range and a clear step up from the ATH-M50X.
