Best Portable Dac/Amp Under $600

Thanks for all the feedback. Now I'm back to an issue I experienced in the beginning where I noticed RF noise, but it only happened in an elevator. Now I upgraded my phone to an S7 Edge and have begun noticing more noise... will continue testing.

Just in case, any further recommendations from anyone regarding a similarly-priced alternative is greatly appreciated!

Airplane mode should fix this if you're listening to music stored on your device. It will, however, prevent you from making calls and using wifi/data (so you obviously wouldn't be able to stream music/videos). This is a common problem.

You could also pick up a Fiio X7 DAP instead, if the issue persists with your phone. The S7 Edge is a sweet phone, however!

Or the Geek Out V2+ Infinity if you can get a hold of it.

Been waiting on an otg cable from Lavricables that I'm hoping can help or fix the interference problem as it seems to have great shielding, will let you know as soon as it arrives (hopefully today!). Don't know if the cable I got from ebay has proper shielding or not.

Or the Geek Out V2+ Infinity if you can get a hold of it.

I've been looking into this and been having trouble finding a decent review and comparison vs Mojo. It seems to be about the same price if I'm not mistaken, maybe smaller too? Definitely seems interesting, any thoughts or links to reviews you may have would be great!

Ok never mind. Just gave it a good listen with no background noise. Keeping the Mojo!

Just tried out the Lavricable I received yesterday. No noise! There was a slight bit of noise when I initially turned the Mojo on, for like 2 seconds, then I plugged it in and it all went away. Not sure if due to just the elimination of noise or the quality of the cable as well, but it sounds much cleaner.

And the S7 Edge is indeed a sweet phone

This is some great thread I have been looking up to.
Was planning to pick some USB DAC under $200.

How about the

Audioquest Dragonfly v1.5
Denon DA 300USB
Micca Origen
Creative sound blaster E5
JDSLab ODAC

Looking forward to suggestions.

If you're considering the Dragonfly might as well get the Red. However, if you're planning on using an Android as a source player (or at least a Galaxy one), I wouldn't recommend it. I got it before the Mojo and while the sound was good, there are volume issues. You need to put it all way up to 100% to appreciate it (this is through USB Audio Player), but then it's a bit too loud for some occasions. But when you bring it down even one notch it's too low. According to Audioquest Android hijacks the max volume settings. In short, get a DAC with a volume knob.

I haven't tested the others but came across the E5 in my research.

And I haven't tested it either but I think spending just a bit more to get the OPPO HA-2 may be worth it. You can get it for $250, refurbished, straight from OPPO, including the same warranty they have on their new ones.

I researched which amp to go with for a quite some time and if I wasn't going with the Mojo, the HA-2 seemed to be the best one under $500.

But then again I'm brand new to this.

What cable did you use before that got interference? Once you changed the cable, it was all good?

I'm trying to decide if I want to get a Mojo or get a dap like the AK70.

I'm trying to decide if I want to get a Mojo or get a dap like the AK70.

The cable I had was this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/7cm-Right-Angle-to-Left-Angle-Micro-USB-Host-OTG-Cable-for-DAC-Digital-Amplifier-/291627246005

It wasn't bad, and it should be noted that all the interference I noticed was when I was on the train during my commute. It's an hour each way though, so I didn't want to put up with it after paying $599 for the Mojo. Out of that hour, I'd say interference for about 10 minutes total (very rough estimate), and that being interference so high that it was louder than the music. During quieter parts of the commute, on quiet parts of songs, I could hear background interference that wasn't noticeable when the volume was higher.

With the new cable I'd say I hear interference for maybe 2 seconds total in an entire day. And that's it. No background noise either.

I decided to keep the Mojo as I was not fond of having to switch back and forth between a DAP and my phone. I'm constantly on my phone reading news and chatting or whatever other nonsense, so it'd be tedious to have to switch back and forth if I want to switch tracks and so on. You're carrying an extra device regardless, but since I am constantly on my phone, I literally just hold the Mojo and my phone in one hand at all times during the summer. In winter there's the benefit of larger coat pockets.

...That was a long answer. Hope it helps.

What's the best amp to go with the Cowon P1? I want to keep it as portable or ultra-portable as it can be with the best SQ. The amp should be able to power phones at least 300 ohms and above. Budget is $200 max. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
